History

The team, founded more than 100 years ago in 1907 was known as Fußball-Klub Alemania Augsburg, named after the famous Fugger family of Augsburg. Between 1921 and 1969 the clubs was more commonly known as BC Augsburg, now known as FC Augsburg.

The early 2000s was a difficult time for the club, as they experienced fluctuation between the second and third division and suffering relegation to the fourth division for two seasons. Augsburg recovered from this, returning to professional football in 2006 and at the end of the 2010–11 season, Augsburg were promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time. The club retained their status as a Bundesliga club for a second year with a game to spare for the following season. The 2013 -2014 season the club finished in eighth place and competed, though unsuccessfully for a UEFA Europa League place. The following season they progressed to finish in fifth place of the Bundesliga, which led them for a qualification for the 2015 – 2016 UEFA Europa League. They advanced to the knockout stages of the completion however they did not make it past round 32 where they were drawn against Liverpool FC.

 The Team

Markus Weinzierl announced on 2 June 2016 that he will be leaving FC Augsburg, to become the new manager of FC Schalke 04. This then followed by the immediate signing of Dirk Schuster who was then the outgoing manager of SV Darmstadt 98 as his replacement.

In recent news, Liverpool has been targeting Ragnar Klavan for a transfer deal worth £4.2m. Klavan has played over 30 league games with the club and played both legs of Augsburg's defeat to Liverpool FC in the Europa League last season. In the meantime, Augsburg has signed attacking midfielder Takashi Usami from Japanese football club Gamba Osaka in a four-year deal.

The club is making waves in German football with gifted players and new signing such as Alfred Finnbogason, who arrived from Real Sociedad saved the club from various defeats in the second half of the season. Manager Weinzal has been quoted saying “he’s got a certain coolness about him” and has earned a full time place with the club
