Liverpool won their first First Division trophy nine years after the league was formed and ended their 30-year title drought, winning their first ever Premier League title in the 2019/20 season with Jürgen Klopp.

In Europe, Liverpool is the most successful English club, winning 13 European titles: six UEFA Champions Leagues, three UEFA Europa Leagues and four UEFA Super Cups. Even as individual titles, no English club has won more UCLs, UELs or USCs, which really demonstrates their dominance in English football history.

The Reds’ most memorable European night is one that is deeply embedded in UCL history as one of the greatest finals of all time - the Miracle of Istanbul. After going 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan, Liverpool came back to equalise the score by the 60th minute; Reds manager Rafael Benítez must have given his side the team-talk of his life. After extra time, Liverpool won 3-2 on penalties, a game which will forever be remembered as the Miracle of Istanbul.

7. Liverpool FC Holds the Record for the Most English League Cups

With ten League Cups, no team has won the trophy more than Liverpool, winning two already since the start of the new decade, both, funnily enough, against rivals Chelsea. Liverpool's first League Cup came in the 1980/81 season, where they beat West Ham 2-1 in a match replay at Villa Park.

Unfortunately, Liverpool will not be able to extend their League Cup wins to 11 as the Reds were knocked out by Crystal Palace in Round 4 on 29 October 2025.

Fagan retired in 1985, forever embedded in the club’s history, leaving behind a distinguished legacy.

9. Liverpool FC’s Original Colours were Blue & White

When John Houlding first formed the club in 1892, the original colours of the kit were not red, but actually blue and white. Houlding inherited the colours familiar to Everton, who used to play at Anfield, but four years later, the English businessman implemented a red and white kit, a contrast to the blue of Everton.

It wasn’t until 1964 that manager Bill Shankley switched to an all-red kit, intending to make his team look more intimidating. Now, the all-red kits of Liverpool are truly iconic, and fans would not have it any other way.

10. Liverpool FC’s All-time Top Goalscorer is Ian Rush

His final 346th goal was scored on 5 May 1996 against Manchester City in the Premier League 1995/96, leaving the club at the end of that season as the club’s all-time top goalscorer and an absolute legend.

11. Liverpool FC’s All-time top Appearance Maker is Ian Callaghan

Many would think club legends like Jamie Carragher or Steven Gerrard would be Liverpool’s all-time top appearance makers. Whilst the pair are second and third respectively for club appearances, stepping forward at the number one spot is Ian Callaghan.

Callaghan played a remarkable total of 857 times for the Reds, making his debut on 16 April 1960 in a 4-0 win against Bristol Rovers, then featuring a final time in a second-leg semi-final of the European Cup in 1978 against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Liverpool went on to win the European Cup, but Callaghan was an unused substitute and departed the club at the end of the season.

12.Liverpool FC’s Stand, called The Kop, is named after a Hill

the-kop-stand

Liverpool’s stand, called The Kop, is named after Spion Kop, which is a hill located in South Africa known for the bloody battle during the Boer War from 1899-1902. In the Battle of Spion Kop on 23-24 January 1900, the British forces were defeated by the tactical Boers, resulting in the deaths of hundreds, many of whom were from Liverpool and Lancashire. Therefore, in tribute to the many soldiers who died and were from the city, the east stand was named The Kop.

13. Liverpool FC’s Anthem is “You’ll Never Walk Alone”

In 1945, the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” debuted in the musical Carousel, created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The song has a deep, yet simple message of staying positive and encouraging during tough times.

In 1963, a local band called Gerry and the Pacemakers created a version of the song from Carousel, which was played at Anfield, amongst other clubs’ home grounds. Leader of the band, Gerry Marsedan, gave the Liverpool manager at the time, Bill Shankly, a copy of his band’s hit version a year later. For the FA Cup Final in 1965, Marsedan’s version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was played, and Liverpool went on to lift their first-ever FA Cup trophy, cementing the song’s status in the club.

In 1979, Liverpool became the first professional English side to feature a prominent shirt sponsor, doing so with Japanese electronic brand Hitachi. Chairman at the time, John Smith, sought to gain new income streams to build the club’s success further.

This fact is commonly misconceived as Liverpool was not the first English club to play with a sponsor on their kit. In 1976, non-league side Kettering Town brought out a kit sponsored by Kettering Tyres, but the Football Association banned the sponsorship move, resulting in the club removing it.

15. Liverpool FC has a “This is Anfield” Sign above the Player Tunnel

this-is-anfield-sign

Above the player tunnel in Liverpool’s stadium, there is a sign titled “This is Anfield”, implemented by manager Bill Shankly as a method to inspire his players and intimidate their opponents.

Traditionally, players touched it for luck; however, Jürgen Klopp stopped his players from doing so until his side won trophies. This created a powerful message of earning the right to touch the sign, one of the many reasons why the Reds saw silverware brought home during the German manager’s era.

Liverpool’s success was brought to a slight standstill post UCL victory in Istanbul, but has been re-ignited in recent years, with the Reds tipped to win plenty more in the near future.
