Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk: Gunners Triumph Over Shakhtar in Champions League Match

Arsenal scraped past Shakhtar Donetsk by 1-0 in their UEFA Champions League match at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night. The only moment the ball crossed the bar was in the 29th minute when Gabriel Martinelli shot at goal and Riznyk’s attempt to save the ball deflected it back into the back of his net. This was enough to hand Mikel Arteta’s side all three points, taking their points total in the group stage to seven from 3 matches.

The turning point was when Martinelli shifted right foot and fired a shot that hit the post of the goal. The ball hit the headache of Riznyk and rolled over the line and so Arsenal took the lead. The Gunners were then able to have the opportunity to extend their lead before the halftime break, and it would have been Havertz’s eighth in as many games for the club at the Emirates, but the Shakhtar defense was able to clear the ball off the line at the last possible second.

In the second half of the match, Arsenal were simply much worse than it was in the first half. At times they were unable to build any sort of flow and were handed an opportunity to make it 2-0 on the stroke when the referee initially waved play on for a handball, but VAR intervened. Leandro Trossard tried to take the penalty and shoot it, but Riznyk made a great reaction and saved it with his legs.

Arsenal nervously saw out the victory and recorded another clean sheet on the other side of the pitch to put them in a good position in the Champions League league stage.
