Arsenal 2-0 PSG: Havertz and Saka Score As Arsenal Defeat PSG in UEFA Champions League
02 Oct 2024

Arsenal claimed their first triumph in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League group phase, dominating Paris Saint-Germain and winning 2-0 at home. Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka scored early to put the game to bed and the Gunners have now gone nine games without a defeat in all competitions. This outcome takes Arsenal to four points in the League phase after having started with a draw against Atalanta.

The team led by Mikel Arteta appeared much more confident than in the previous match and showed why many consider them one of the favourites to win this year’s Champions League. Arsenal had the upper hand in the game from the onset, and Havertz put the ball past Donnarumma in the 20th minute from a smart cross by Leandro Trossard. Havertz was brave and accurate as he outjumped to head the ball into the net.

15 minutes later, the score was doubled by Bukayo Saka who curled a free-kick at the edge of the box and made it past Donnarumma who was rooted to the ground, expecting the ball to be headed towards the far post. Even after PSG tried to push and regain their dominance in the second half, the French champions couldn't get back to the game. The nearest the visitors came was João Neves in the 68th minute who had his shot bounce back off the crossbar with Arsenal’s David Raya helpless.

This victory takes Arsenal’s run without a loss against PSG in Europe to five matches – PSG’s worst run without a victory in the Champions League over any side. Arsenal will now seek to extend this good performance in their next match against Shakhtar Donetsk on October 22 at the Emirates with PSG playing against PSV Eindhoven on the same evening.
