Arsenal Finalise £33m Deal for Italian Defender

Arsenal have completed the signing of the highly-rated Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for £33 million. The 22-year-old center-half was being eyed by many of the top Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City after a great season in Serie A and a good performance in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Calafiori was also instrumental in Bologna’s stellar season where they finished 5th in the league – the team’s highest finish in the league since 1971 and appeared in 33 fixtures across all competitions. His good performances continued to international football, where he played for Italy in the Euro 2024 as well as the round of 16. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the new signing in a statement: ”We are glad to have Riccardo joining the Arsenal family, he is a great addition and adds strength to our defense, he is a character with specific skills that will help us as we strive to compete for major trophies. ” He has been showing tremendous improvement in the last year especially while playing for Bologna and Italy, we are looking forward to working with Riccardo, and assimilating him into the team". He has now trained with Arsenal's first team in their pre-season tour in the USA and could feature in the match against Liverpool on Wednesday. The best tournament for Calafiori was Euro 2024 in which he played three good matches for Italy, including a great assist in the final match of the group stage against Croatia. His arrival strengthens an Arsenal team that has one of the best backlines in the English Premier League that only conceded 29 goals in 38 matches last season.
