Arsenal football club was able to further their pre-season preparations by thrashing the German champions Bayer Leverkusen with a 4-1 scoreline at the Emirates stadium. The match which was played on a warm evening proved Arsenal’s goal scoring might and the encounter was perfect as it laid the foundation for the new season.
It was the first time the Gunners had played at home since the last day of the previous season and they seized the initiative. Zinchenko got the first goal for his side with a clear shot that was beyond the reach of Leverkusen’s goalkeeper. Leandro Trossard made it two nil soon after the break, as he took advantage of a defensive blunder to fire in a finish. The goals that came one after the other shocked Leverkusen, who were in turmoil.
Gabriel Jesus made it three shortly before the break, capitalizing on a mistake by Leverkusen’s defenders who misplaced a throw-in before the Brazilian coolly slotted home.
The second half also had Arsenal in the driving seat of the match. Bukayo Saka was introduced to the field from the bench, and he was impressive. German striker Kai Havertz met his cheeky ping-back. Havertz was quick to make it 4-0 and that was sweet music to the ears of the Gunners faithful. Leverkusen, who ended the last Bundesliga season without a defeat, could only score a consolation goal in the last minute through Adam Hlozek. This coming Sunday, Arsenal will play against Lyon in the Emirates Cup, as they prepare for the next season.
At the same time, Aston Villa got a victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Bescot Stadium of Walsall with a score of 3-2, where Cameron Archer scored a powerful solo goal before the end of the match. Athletic Bilbao equalized twice, but Archer scored the final and winning goal that made them win the match. Jacob Ramsey put the ball into the net after a good team build-up play; Yeray Alvarez equalized for Bilbao. Jaden Philogene put Villa back in front just before the break, but Bilbao replied through Gorka Guruzeta’s fine finish on the hour. Villa will end their pre-season preparations against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.
