Athletic Bilbao 2-1 Real Madrid: Mbappé Misses Penalty as Los Blancos Suffer Shock Defeat

Real Madrid C.F. faced a stunning 2-1 defeat against Athletic Club at the iconic San Mamés, marking a crucial setback in their La Liga title ambitions. Despite moments of brilliance from Jude Bellingham, the night was overshadowed by Kylian Mbappé’s penalty miss and a decisive late winner from Gorka Guruzeta.

Athletic Club Stuns Los Blancos at San Mamés

The game began with both teams vying for control, but the second half delivered the decisive moments. Athletic Bilbao’s Alex Berenguer opened the scoring just after the break. Inaki Williams orchestrated the goal with a pinpoint cross that outmanoeuvred Madrid’s defence, allowing Berenguer to capitalize on Thibaut Courtois’ initial block.

Real Madrid CF had an opportunity to equalise in the 67th minute when Julen Agirrezabala fouled Antonio Rudiger in the box during a Rodrygo free-kick. Kylian Mbappé stepped up to take the penalty but was denied by a brilliant save from Agirrezabala, diving to his left.

Jude Bellingham eventually brought RMA back into the game, scoring in the 73rd minute after latching onto a parried Mbappé shot. However, Athletic Bilbao regained the lead in the 80th minute. A mistake by Federico Valverde allowed Gorka Guruzeta to steal possession and calmly slot past Courtois, sealing an amazing win for the hosts.

Affect on La Liga Standings

With this shocking loss, Real Madrid C.F. stays 5 points away from FC Barcelona, who sit at the top of the La Liga table with 37 points from 16 games. Real Madrid CF have a game in hand, but today they missed a great opportunity to get closer to their El Classico Rivals.
