Brighton 3-2 Tottenham: Hosts Come From Behind to Mount Stunning Comeback as Spurs Throw Away Two-Goal Lead

Tottenham Hotspur looked set for a comfortable afternoon as they led 2-0 at halftime. However, Brighton rallied in the second half to secure a 3-2 victory in the Premier League match at the Amex. Johnson and Maddison scored early goals for the visitors, but Spurs suddenly found themselves level, only for Welbeck to head a dramatic winner to much applause from the home fans.

The first half was dominated by Tottenham, who were dominant. Brennan Johnson maintained his scoring spree with his 6th goal in the 6th match in a row. His clinical finish in the 23rd minute put Spurs on the drive and they had most of the ball possession and looked a potent attacking force. James Maddison made it two for Tottenham right on the stroke of halftime by unleashing a fierce shot from the edge of the box that bounced through the hands of Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen to make it 2-0 going to the second half.

However, Brighton responded to the first half with fresh vigor and it did not take them long to bring changes in the game. Yankuba Minteh scored his first goal for the club just three minutes into the second period, the Seagulls took advantage of a defensive mistake. This early goal upset Tottenham, and Brighton went on the front foot. Georginio Rutter, in the first half of the hour, bullied his way through Spurs’ defense, and calmly equalized for the match, making the score 2-2. Rutter then became the provider, and supplied a pinpoint cross for Danny Welbeck who rose above his marker to head home a winner in the 66th minute.

The result put paid to Brighton’s four-game Premier League winless streak and saw the Seagulls climb to sixth in the Premier League table. For Tottenham, the defeat ended their five consecutive victories in all tournaments; they remain in 9th place and fans wonder whether the team can convert matches into wins in critical moments.
