Champions League 2024/25 Format Explained

The new 2024/25 UEFA Champions League season brings the most radical changes in two decades, and innovations that will change the face of the European championship. This season’s format will be new for football fans as the competition is to have 36 teams and a new league format. Given such a dramatic format change, the fight for the Champions League spots will be the most thrilling that it has ever been.

How the New Format Works

Some of the most obvious changes include expanding the number of teams from 32 to 36. Instead of the much-used group format, the new system pits all 36 teams in a league format. All clubs will play eight games against different clubs, four of which will be played at their home ground and the other four on the opponents’ territory. Those who wish to watch the game live will be able to get Champions League tickets for a variety of different games.

After these eight matchday, the first eight teams in the table will be qualified directly for the Round of 16. The teams that are placed in the 9th to 24th position will play in the playoff round which will be in the form of two-legged ties to determine the teams that will progress to the knockout round. This new format offers the spectators numerous opportunities to see games with a lot of tension and thus makes the tickets for the Champions League even more precious.

Why the Format Change?

UEFA has made changes to the format of the Champions League to make it more interesting, especially in the initial round of the competition. With the expansion of the league stage and the increase in the number of encounters between the elite clubs, UEFA wants to create more competitive games. This new approach ensures that mid-level clubs get to play against elite clubs and every match becomes very important. For the fans, this means that they will be able to watch more games thus creating a high demand for the Champions League tickets across the entire Europe.

Previous Changes to the Champions League Format

It is not the first time that the Champions League has seen some major changes in its structure. The tournament has gone through several changes over the years and each of the changes has helped to make the competition what it is today. Here are a few key changes over the years:

In the beginning, the European Cup was a knockout competition. But in the year 1991, UEFA brought in the semi-final group stage which paved the way for the future of the Champions League. People who were in search of Champions League tickets at that time would have realized that there were different formats of the matches.

  • 1994: Group Stage Expansion

The 1994/95 season began with the 16-team group stage, thus providing more fans with an opportunity to get the early round Champions League tickets, and the first round was divided into four groups of four teams.

  • 1997: Second-Place Teams Included

By the end of the 1990s, UEFA went a step further to include the second-placed teams from the top football leagues in Europe. The competition was split into six groups of four which meant that the Champions League tickets for the group stage were more valuable than ever.

  • 1999: Second Group Stage

The 1999/2000 season saw the second group stage added with the top two teams from each group moving to the next round of 16 teams. This format was discontinued in 2003 but during the period it enhanced the number of matches and hence the demand for Champions League tickets.

  • 2003: Formation of the Round of 16.

From the season 2003/04, UEFA adopted the format of the Round of 16 after the group stage which was in place for more than two decades and is set to change from the 2024/25 season.
