Spain have secured their qualification to the UEFA Nations League knockout stages and topped their group after a 2-1 win to Denmark in Denmark. The reigning European champions put up a good show at the Parken Stadium as two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Ayoze Pérez were enough to give Real Sociedad the victory, which was short-lived because of the last-minute equalizer by Gustav Isaksen.
The game started with Denmark benefiting from the home side’s fans’ enthusiasm. However, the Spanish side with captain Mikel Oyarzabal took quite some time to get into the groove. Following a first-half miss from the penalty area, Spain scored a goal in the 15th minute, taking advantage of a defensive mistake to make it 1-0 with a finish from Oyarzabal.
Spain dominated possession for a large part of the first half and Dani Olmo and Ayoze Pérez missed chances to make it 2-0. Spain’s midfield and the flair of the attack made it a very hard game for Denmark as they weren't able to create any chances.
In the second half, Spain increased their lead after a nice build-up. Dani Olmo linked up well with Pérez who put Spain 2-0 ahead and this was a comfortable lead for the defending champions. Pérez had another opportunity to finish the game but missed it, and the Danes were still alive.
The Danes, however, only managed to get their first goal in the closing stages of the match after Gustav Isaksen took advantage of a careless back pass. The goal made the last five minutes nervy for the European champions defense stood tall to ensure the win.
This win takes Spain to the next stage of the tournament and the final Group stage match against Switzerland will not affect their standings. It is a chance for the manager Luis de la Fuente to make some changes in the team and to give some players a break because the team has been riddled with injuries and some of the key players, such as Rodri, had to leave the field for the rest of the season due to the ACL injury.
For Denmark, the defeat brings an end to a 29-month unbeaten run at home. However, for the next stage of the quarter-final, they are still alive. Switzerland and Serbia played out a draw in the other match in the group, meaning Denmark holds the key to their qualification in the last match.
