Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson threw the kitchen sink at it and revealed some interesting things about the club’s future, especially concerning the future without Pep Guardiola. The future of the Spaniard in City has been a big issue, especially when his current contract is to end next year. Ederson also suggested that the club has a ready-made replacement for Guardiola for when the time is right for him to exit.
He has been occupying the position of head coach in Manchester City since 2016, during which the club became one of the most successful ones and won the treble in 2023, conquering every trophy in its way. However, the following factors have raised eyebrows over his future at the club. The first and most pressing is the imminent departure of Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football and a long-time friend of Guardiola. Furthermore, the current legal battles between Manchester City and the Premier League have also contributed to conjecture regarding his career.
When asked, Ederson believes that the club is ready for life after Pep Guardiola. ‘City is a very well-structured club, with great directors, a strong CEO, and an excellent coach’ he said. I think the club has already chosen the next manager in line. When Pep decides to go, they will almost certainly be replaced by someone similar, of course, it will be a blow. You’re talking about the best coach in the world."
Ederson also gave his thoughts on how Guardiola has been instrumental in his career at City. He said he nearly moved out of the club in the summer after being offered a better wage than most players. But after several talks with Guardiola, Ederson decided to remain a part of the club and attributed his decision to the influence of the coach. ‘I can’t talk about a conversation I had with Pep but there is one that I can’t disclose, and it was that conversation, what he told me, and everything that we have been through that made the difference,” Ederson said.
The Brazilian goalkeeper also lauded Guardiola as a man who takes time to nurture talents, he referred to him as the ‘GPS’ of the team. He said: “Many players have grown from nothing to great footballers under Pep.” It’s your life: he points you in a direction, but you must take the steps to get there.” The fact that you do not get better under him means that you do not want to.”
