Gareth Southgate has unveiled his final England squad for Euro 2024, making significant cuts and leaving out some notable names. Jack Grealish, James Maddison, and Harry Maguire are among the big names missing from the final lineup. Southgate initially selected a 33-player training group, which has now been reduced to 26 ahead of tomorrow’s submission deadline.
James Maddison and Curtis Jones were among the first to be excluded, with Maddison taking to social media to express his sorrow. Harry Maguire’s fitness remained a concern after missing the end of Manchester United's season due to a calf injury. Maguire, who participated in all of England’s qualifying matches, shared his disappointment, stating he is "absolutely gutted."
Jack Grealish faced challenges throughout the season, struggling for game time at Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side retained the Premier League title, but Grealish did not feature in their last four fixtures, leading to his exclusion. Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah also missed out on the final selection.
Everton expressed support for Branthwaite on social media, encouraging him to keep his head up and be proud of his achievements this season, including earning his first cap for England.
Adam Wharton’s impressive end to the season secured him an unexpected spot in the squad. The Crystal Palace midfielder joins his teammates Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, and Eberechi Eze. West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen has also secured his place among the fiercely competitive attacking group, which includes Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer.
The debate over who would be chosen between Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins has been resolved with Southgate deciding to include both strikers in the squad for the tournament in Germany.
England’s preparations will continue with a friendly match against Iceland on June 7, before kicking off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16. They will then face further group stage matches against Denmark and Slovenia on June 20 and June 25.
