English Premier League Clubs Plan to Expand Their Stadiums to Increase the Seating Capacity and Increase Revenue

To cater to increasing demand, the Premier League clubs are stepping up their spending to increase the capacity of and develop their grounds. Given the target of raising the average stadium seating by at least 14% within the next ten years, stadium development is vital to improving match-going income in the world’s most viewed football league.

Premier League clubs aim to increase the seating capacity by at least 115,000 across league stadiums in the next decade. The improvements are prompted not only because fans’ interest increases but also because stadiums are considered to be valuable for revenue purposes. Unlike broadcast rights, which are sold collectively by the league and then divided amongst the teams, ticket sales and other revenues accruing from the stadium can be maximized.

Stadium projects are also associated with the new investors who came with new money to clubs, which led to more construction. While most of these initiatives are at the conceptual stage and involve discussions with the municipal governments, more stadium initiatives are expected to be unveiled as clubs seek to meet the growing fan interest.

Tottenham Hotspur, with a £1bn new stadium inaugurated in 2019, has put other Premier League grounds to shame. That has led competitors to think about renovations or new construction of their plants to keep up with the competition. For example, Everton plans to move from Goodison Park which has been its home ground since 1892, to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Docks on the waterfront, for the next season. This is likely to greatly increase Everton’s matchday revenue as a new ground will hold more people and will be more appealing with better facilities.
