As Euro 2024 progresses to the business end of the group stages, several teams have secured their spots in the knockout rounds, while others still battle for a place. The tournament has delivered drama, thrilling matches, and plenty of goals. Let’s delve into who has qualified for the last 16, who England might face, and the fate of the best third-placed teams.
Which Teams Have Qualified for the Knockout Stages?
Group A
Germany were the first team to qualify for the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Hungary. Despite a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in their final group game, a late goal from Niclas Fullkrug ensured Germany topped the group. Switzerland’s draw also saw them advance to the next stage. Group B

Italy progressed as runners-up thanks to a last-minute equalizer, leaving Croatia's fate dependent on whether they can advance as one of the best third-placed teams, a mathematically possible but unlikely outcome. Albania exited the tournament with just one point.
Group C
England secured their place in the knockout stages, topping the group despite a series of lackluster performances, including goalless draws against Denmark and Slovenia. Denmark finished second, and Slovenia advanced as a guaranteed third-placed qualifier.
Group D
Austria topped Group D after a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Netherlands. Despite losing, the Netherlands secured third place, while France finished second following a 1-1 draw with Poland, which saw Poland eliminated. Austria will face the runner-up from Group F, France will take on the runner-up from Group E, and the Netherlands await their next opponent.
Group E
All four teams in Group E sit on three points after Ukraine’s 2-1 win over Slovakia and Belgium’s 2-0 victory against Romania. The final matches between Slovakia and Romania and Ukraine against Belgium will determine who advances, with goal difference and head-to-head results deciding the standings if the games end in draws.
Group F
Portugal secured the top spot in Group F after a commanding 3-0 win over Turkey. Turkey needs just one point against the Czech Republic to advance. Both Georgia and the Czech Republic remain in contention, with their final match outcomes determining who progresses, potentially even as one of the best third-placed teams.

As winners of Group C, England will face one of the best third-placed teams from Group D, Group E, or Group F. Potential opponents include the Netherlands from Group D, but the third-placed teams from Groups E and F remain undecided.
