Football Fans Warned: Do Not Buy Fake Premier League Tickets

Last season, as many as 12,000 youngsters in the UK were conned into buying fake tickets to watch Premier League games, a figure presented by Lloyds Bank. The bank revealed that ticketing fraud has increased by about a third for the customers of the bank compared with the previous season and called on the fans to be wary of these scams.

According to the banking industry group UK Finance, tickets tend to sell out very fast, and this creates an opportunity for fraudsters to target fans who are desperately searching for tickets at the last minute. They urged social media companies to do more to tackle fraud and warned customers to be careful.

Lloyds Bank suggested in the last football season alone, about 6000 British football fans were victims of ticket scams. This estimate was computed from the company’s fraud data and used its approximate 20% market share of current accounts in the UK to do the study. This implies that at least 1,200 customers of Lloyds bank were defrauded in the last season, with more than half of the affected persons between the ages of 18-34 years.

Surprisingly, the fans of the leading teams such as Arsenal and Liverpool were most of the fans that were scammed. Some 56% of the scams started on Facebook Marketplace, and 26% began on X (previously Twitter). Similarly, this year before Taylor Swift’s concert began in the UK, Lloyds Bank approximated that her fans were conned into £1 million 500,000 by ticket cons.

How the Scams Work

The scammers will create fake posts on social media platforms or fake selling sites, then sell fake tickets using real ticket pictures. It is carried out by making the victims pay, mostly through bank transfers, under pretenses. In this case, once the money is transferred the fraudster will disappear and the victim will be left with nothing.

Bank transfers are especially unsafe for online purchases since they do not have the same consumer protection measures as credit card purchases. While banks can compensate the victims, this method is rather time-consuming and unsafe compared to the other options.
