France Football Fans Stunned as Montpellier President Fires Manager During Live Television Interview

This weekend, French football fans had to rub their eyes when Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin made a shocking revelation on TV. Nicollin admitted to having made up his mind to fire manager Michel Der Zakarian after a shocking 5-0 loss against Marseille at home.

Montpellier has been experiencing problems all season long and has only recorded a single victory in Ligue 1. This latest defeat placed them right at the bottom of the table. The match had a horror start for Montpellier as Marseille forward Elye Wahi scored the opening goal after only 44 seconds at the Stade de la Mosson.

From there the situation worsened for the home side. Amine Harit's first-half strike by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, ensured a comfortable lead for Marseille. In the second half, former Manchester United players Mason Greenwood and Luis Enrique made Montpellier’s evening even worse. This loss leaves Montpellier with only four points in the league after eight games, with Angers sharing the same number of points but better placed due to goal difference.

Der Zakarian’s Sacking Broadcast on TV

In an interview with DAZN France immediately after the match, Nicollin went on to drop a bombshell that Der Zakarian had been sacked. Ben Cheyrou and Smail Bouabdellah, the two interviewers, showed signs of shock as soon as they heard the news.

“We cannot change 25 players so unfortunately I have had to take the initiative and have stopped Michel from playing tonight,” said Nicollin. He was very blunt in his conversation with the team particularly, he blamed the players for the poor performance. ‘I said to the players, thanks to their great job, they have sacked the coach and now they have to get their act together against Toulouse next week.’

Der Zakarian was in his second spell at Montpellier, having rejoined the club in February 2023 after first joining in 2017 and managing the team until 2021. He was a club legend and was also a player for the team for ten years. However, Montpellier has been facing the challenge of looking for another trainer to help them exit the current crisis.
