Gareth Southgate Quits After Euro 2024 Final Loss to Spain

Gareth Southgate is no longer the manager of the English national football team having been in the position for almost eight years. He decided this after the heart-wrenching loss of in the Euro 2024 final match. They lost him on the eve of the World Cup qualifiers. He was supposed to leave in December after his contract runs out, but he decided to leave now after taking the Three Lions to the European Championship final for the second time.

Southgate, appointed in 2016, will depart as third manager to manage England games. He has managed 102 matches, out of which he achieved 61 victories, and he is among one of the successful managers of the country. During his reign, England got to the final of Euro 2024, after getting to the final of Euro 2020 which was their first major final since winning the World Cup in 1966.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday morning, Southgate could not fail to pen down a heartfelt message to the players, staff, and fans that had stood by him throughout his reign. “Playing for my country has been an honor of a lifetime and so was managing the team, I have dedicated everything I had to it,” he said. ‘But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.

Southgate took up the position with the FA with the aim of enhancing football in England. He had a hardworking team around him during his eight-year tenure at the England men’s team; Steve Holland, the assistant manager, whom Southgate described as one of the most talented coaches of his generation, left the team as well, Southgate had worked with him since the under-21s.

Reflecting on his time in charge, Southgate praised the players: "I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways." He expressed confidence in the squad's future, noting their potential to win major trophies. "The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent, and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them."

Southgate also acknowledged the fans: "We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be. Thank you, England – for everything.

Southgate's tenure began in 2016 following the team's embarrassing loss to Iceland at Euro 2016. He took over after Sam Allardyce's brief stint and led England to four major tournaments, including the Euro 2020 final, where they lost to Italy on penalties.

In Euro 2024, England entered as favorites and advanced through the knockout rounds by defeating Slovakia, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. In the final against Spain, Nico Williams put Spain ahead before Cole Palmer equalized for England. However, Mikel Oyarzabal's late goal secured the win for Spain, leaving England with back-to-back defeats in European finals.
