Georgia stunned the globe with a 2-0 win against Portugal which sealed their place in the Euro 2024 knockout round. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored within two minutes, and the second half penalty by Georges Mikautadze put the final nail in the coffin. However, Portugal move to the next round as Group F winners.
The upset of defeating Portugal 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen saw Georgia through to the last 16 in their first major tournament. Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia got the match started by putting the ball past Diego Costa in the first 93 seconds of the match. Georges Mikautadze increased the score from the penalty area in the second half after a mistake from Antonio Silva. The Portuguese coach Roberto Martinez made 8 changes to the team knowing that his team has already qualified for the next round of the competition as the leaders of Group F.
Willy Sagnol of Georgia took his team to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. They will be up against Spain in the next round while Portugal will meet Slovenia. Georgia struggled throughout the tournament but the victory over Portugal showed that they have character and good tactics.

From the first whistle, it became clear what Georgia’s strategy was going to be. Sagnol’s side, playing with 5-3-2 formation, was intended to prevent the opponents from creating chances and, at the same time, try to score. The early goal of Kvaratskhelia was an example of the confidence and the quality of the team. Georgia remained dangerous on the break with Kvaratskhelia and Mikautadze at the forefront while ensuring that their defense was water-tight.
Sagnol will take solace in this result and know that his team has found a winning formation before the game against Spain, the only team in the competition that had a 100 percent record in the group stage.

Kvaratskhelia opened the score for Georgia in style in the early part of the game. The Napoli forward was a constant menace, he was good at holding up the ball and easing pressure from the Portuguese side. Dribbling past defenders and winning of free-kicks were parts of his contribution that played a role in Georgia’s victory.
