Gibraltar vs Netherlands: A Showdown in 2024

After beating Norway in the last game, the Netherlands booked their spot in Euro 2024 and will play Gibraltar away. The next game is set up for Portugal’s Estádio Algarves on Tuesday, offering them hope of finally winning after losing recently.

This campaign has been brutal for Gibraltar, which lost all qualifying matches and finished at the last position on the table. They conceded 35 goals in seven games without a single goal to their name. The Netherlands had defeated them 14-0 in the last match, and they wanted to redeem themselves by beating the Dutch squad one last time. Immediately after the crushing loss to France, Gibraltar vows to return to a winning streak by posing a strong challenge to the Netherlands this time.

Let’s take a look at today’s match highlights:

First-half begins!!!

  • In the 5th minute, Veerman passes the ball into Gibraltar’s penalty. Weghorst hits it but misses the goalpost.
  • In the 10th minute, the Dutch break through. Veerman feeds an excellent pass towards Stengs, who turns it in quickly against Coleing from inside the penalty box for the goal. An access by Veerman finally creates an opportunity for Stengs, who breaks the deadlock.
  • In the 14th minute, the stretcher comes due to an injury, with Pozo having to withdraw. Jolley replaces him, and he is taken off the field.
  • In the 16th minute, although they have notched up an opening goal for the Netherlands are keen on gaining momentum from it.
  • In the 18th minute, Visitors get a corner, yet Gibraltar concentrates and saves itself from the upcoming threat.
  • In the 21st minute, the moment finds Wieffer alone at a vantage point and heads in Malen’s cross right outside the 6-yard box. Nonetheless, the midfielder, though heads on target, is unlucky and hits it wide, only has Coleing to beat.
  • In the 23rd minute, the assist comes from Joey Veerman, who sets up Mats Wieffer for his goal.
  • In the 28th minute, Malen is at the right place at the right time, for Malen’s header goes past the Gibraltar back line. However, he loses his initial control of the ball when it skids away from his stride and into the hands of Coleing.
  • In the 29th minute, Teze moves in as part of the Dutch assault and hits a long crossfield pass from the right touchline. Weghorst shoots his glancing header over the left post.
  • In the 38th minute, 3-0 NETHERLANDS! The Dutch quickly enlarged their advantage. Hartman is in an advanced stage and passes back the ball for Koopmeiners to finish from a close range.
  • Hartman gives an easy chance for Koopmeiners to score three goals via a well-aimed square pass.
  • In the 41st minute, Stengs sends a ball on the cross, and Weghorst heads it in the box. His try, however, faces an obstacle, prolonging his quest for a goal in this encounter.
  • In the 43rd minute, as the end of the first half comes, it is evident that the Netherlands have full command. Now, the question is whether they have a better shot of increasing it.
  • In the 45th minute, Tizi gets the initial yellow card for fouling De Barr.
  • In the 45' + 3' minute, GIBRALTAR 0-3 NETHERLANDS

Second-half begins!!

  • In the 46th minute, Substitution for Netherlands: Van Dijck for Varger and Hatob for Iorrell.
  • Substitution for Netherlands: Tijjani Reijnders replaces Joey Veerman.
  • The Dutch make three substitutions at halftime. Dallinga replaces Weghorst in the first shift.
  • The winger adds another goal in the 50th minute! The scoring is started by Stengs, who charges with force in his direction to the penalty area from the right side. A beautiful one-two with Malen and he slides it through Roy Chipolina’s legs.
  • In the 54th minute, with their fourth goal, the Netherlands beat the previous match’s scoreline. They recorded a 3 – 0 win over them in March.
  • In the 62nd minute, at another crucial moment, Joseph Chipolina slips as he attempts to clear Gibraltar’s lines. Tearing the chance, Teze gives the ball to Stengs who recollects himself before beating one helpless Coleing in goal.
  • Steng moves-wise and delivers the ball to Teze, who then scores and completes for a hat-trick.
  • In the 63rd minute, Simons comes on and Hartman, the assistant for the Netherlands’ third goal, walks off the field for a bit and Hartman is replaced with the assistant of the Netherlands's third goal.
  • In the 66th minute, Joseph Chipolina struggles to go on and is substituted by Badr.
  • Gibraltar makes two additional changes. Walker gets replaced by El Hmidi.
  • Coombes also takes the place of Casciaro.
  • In the 69th minute, the ball heads towards the goal as Koopmeiners’’ corner deflects off De Haro. Luckily, it exceeds the left goalpost.
  • In the 77th minute, Malen, relentless on the left, makes way for Gakpo as he gives out his sweat.
  • In the 61st minute, 6-0 NETHERLANDS! His substitute scores less than four minutes into the match, though it appears accidental. Liverpool’s attacking force comes from cutting in from the left wing with a chip in goalwards, aimed at Dallinga who tries to flick but misses. And therefore, Gakpo earns the mark of having scored in the match.
  • In the 82nd minute, Peacock replaces De Barr, who has been on his own as a lone attacker of Gibraltar.
  • In the 83rd minute, De Haro gets hold of Gakpo in time but is lucky to receive a yellow card with little complaint.
  • In the 89th minute, he aims at the space in front of him from a distance of 25 yards with his feet already moving. A bit off-margin to the left post trickles down from his desperate stride but cannot be reached by Coleing.
  • In the 90' + 3' minute, full time, GIBRALTAR 0-6 NETHERLANDS.
