Lukaku finalizes move to Napoli from Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku has joined Napoli of Serie A after a difficult second spell at Chelsea. The Belgian striker, who earlier in the year regretted not staying in Italy, will be rejoining his former Inter Milan coach, Antonio Conte. Lukaku’s transfer to Napoli can be considered as the end of the two-year period during which he moved on loan to Inter Milan and AS Roma because of the difficulties to establish himself permanently at Stamford Bridge.

The 31-year-old forward comes with a lot of experience, having played for several clubs in Italy. While playing for Inter under Conte, Lukaku had one of his best seasons, which saw him contribute to the team’s Scudetto triumph in 2021. The transfer to Napoli, who are expected to battle for the Serie A title in the upcoming season, could not be a better start for the striker who always scored under Conte. Lukaku will be looking forward to proving a point on his arrival at Napoli, a team that has enjoyed domestic success recently.

Lukaku’s decision to come back to Chelsea at the beginning of the 2021 summer transfer window was not without some controversy. To be precise, after returning to the Blues, he openly expressed his discontent with the club’s performance and the playing approach of the then-manager Thomas Tuchel. ‘‘Physically I’m doing great, it’s just that I’m not very happy with what’s going on, but that is normal,” Lukaku said to Sky Italia in an interview. He complained about the tactical formation and his position in the team, saying, “I think the boss has decided to play in a different formation but I have to accept it and move on professionally. ” The Anderlecht-born striker’s remarks irritated the Chelsea fans and this saw him being successively loaned back to the Serie A, a league, he believed fit him best.

In the same interview, Lukaku also expressed his affection towards Italy and his intention to go back stating, “I always said that I love Inter and I’ll play for them again. I hope so. I fell in love with Italy. ” Now with his transfer to Napoli, Lukaku has the chance to reignite the passion he once had for Italian football and also establish himself in the league once again.
