Man City vs Brighton: The Game of a Lifetime – Live Scores and Updates

Brighton is aiming to climb the rankings and secure a spot in the Champions League, but Roberto De Zerbi's team faces a tough challenge against the reigning English champions. The Seagulls have yet to taste victory in their last four matches across all competitions and have a dismal record against Manchester City, with no wins in 13 league attempts away from home (2 draws, 11 losses).

Following a disappointing run of form, Brighton will be seeking to regain momentum and boost their confidence with a much-needed victory over Guardiola's squad after the international break.

Manchester City welcomes Brighton to the Etihad Stadium, with Pep Guardiola's squad aiming to halt a string of two successive Premier League defeats, having lost to Arsenal and Wolves before the international break.

City boasts an impressive record of 20 consecutive home wins in all competitions and has the opportunity to ascend to the top of the league table with a win today. The last time the Sky Blues lost three consecutive Premier League games was back in 2016, a streak they are keen to avoid replicating in this matchup.

Let's now take a look at these matches:

First-half started!!!

The teams have taken to the pitch, and we're moments away from the start of the game!

  • In the 2nd minute, Walker commits a foul on Mitoma early on, providing Brighton with a chance to flood the box and create an early opportunity. Unfortunately for them, the situation doesn't result in anything significant.
  • In the 6th minute, City has an early opportunity to take the lead. Foden skillfully navigates through Brighton's midfield and cuts inside, using his preferred left foot. He then passes to Doku, who has found space at the edge of the box. Unfortunately, Doku's attempt to curl the ball into the net is unsuccessful as it goes wide of the post.
  • In the 7th minute, it's a goal for Manchester City! They take the lead, 1-0, with a brilliant finish by Alvarez! Doku gets the ball out wide, faces his marker, then weaves through Brighton's defenders into the box. A perfect opening for Guardiola's team!
  • In the 11th minute, Silva and Gvardiol team up nicely in Brighton's half, with Gvardiol finding himself in a good position at the edge of the box. The Croatian defender decides to take a shot with his weaker foot, but unfortunately, it doesn't trouble Steele, who makes a comfortable save.
  • In the 13th minute, Welbeck appears to be in some discomfort due to an injury, prompting a halt in the game so he can receive medical attention. This potential setback could prove to be a significant blow for De Zerbi and Brighton if their forward is forced to make an early exit from the match.
  • In the 19th minute, it's a goal! Manchester City extends their lead to 2-0 with an outstanding finish from Haaland! Guardiola's squad applies high pressure, leading to Silva dispossessing Baleba in a critical area of the field. This is far from the start De Zerbi and his team had hoped for, and they now need help getting back into the game.
  • In the 32nd minute, Doku skillfully dodges multiple Brighton defenders as he cuts inside, eyeing an opportunity to create trouble in the final third. He makes a beeline for the penalty area, attempting to connect with Alvarez through a well-placed through ball. However, Dunk is up to the challenge and adeptly handles the situation, clearing the ball to safety.
  • In the 38th minute, Manchester City continued to probe the Brighton defense, with Doku delivering a clever through ball to Silva in the box. Silva deftly lifts the ball over the goalkeeper, but following a hectic scramble in the penalty area, Brighton manages to clear the ball to safety.
  • The tempo of the match has noticeably decreased, with Manchester City seemingly satisfied to enter halftime with a two-goal advantage. Under the guidance of Guardiola, the team is prioritizing ball retention and displaying patience in their build-up play.

An extra four minutes added to the extra time.

Second-Half begins!!!

  • In the 52nd minute, it's a missed opportunity! Adingra expertly threads a pass through the City defenders to find Gross unmarked inside the box. The Brighton midfielder cleverly beats the offside trap and advances towards Ortega, but, unfortunately, his final shot is off-target and misses the post. That was a golden opportunity, and Gross will feel he should have capitalized on it.
  • In the 64th minute, Igor finds himself receiving a yellow card after committing a late tackle on Rodri, who had skillfully maneuvered the ball past the Brighton defender.
  • In the 68th minute, it's again an opportunity! Manchester City nearly extends their lead to three goals. Foden delivers a precise pass that cuts through Brighton's defense, finding Haaland in a promising position. Haaland expertly controls the ball and shifts it onto his left foot, attempting to curl it past Steele. However, Steele pulls off a fantastic save to deny Haaland and maintain the scoreline at 2-0.
  • In the 73rd minute, Goal! Brighton are right back in this game, with the score now 2-1! Mitoma does excellently, taking on Walker and getting into a dangerous position before sending in a cross. Akanji fails to clear the ball properly, presenting an opportunity to Fati, who calmly places the ball past Ortega in the City goal. The game is very much alive!
  • In the 84th minute, Jack Grealish was shown a yellow card for dissent after expressing his dissatisfaction with a decision made by one of the officials. The referee had little choice but to caution him for his protestations.
  • In the 19th minute, after eight minutes of being brought to the sport, Brighton is simply turning up the warmth as they are seeking a past-due equalizer. Gross's decided run and subsequent cross is a clear sign of their purpose and that they've gained an essential corner in those very last moments of the game. This is a great opportunity for them to capitalize on Manchester City being a man down and probably receive a point from this match.

City may be relieved to have held on for the win, specifically after the purple card and the late intention from Brighton made the final minutes greater nerve pain than they would have liked. The early dreams from Alvarez and Haaland, in the long run, made the difference, with City doing simply enough to fend off Brighton's comeback attempt within the second half.

Brighton can be dissatisfied to come away empty-handed after showing a few actual high-quality resolutions to get again into the sport. Still, they could take a few positives from their overall performance, especially the way they finished the match on the front foot. This win may be crucial for City as they appear to recover from their recent poor form in the league.
