At the Etihad Stadium, John Stones scored a late equalizer to rescue a 2-2 draw for Manchester City, despite playing against an Arsenal team with only 10 men. The Gunners, who had mastered a defensive 5-4-0 formation in the second half, were just seconds away from a historic win before Stones’ last-gasp goal earned an important point for City, ensuring they reclaim the top spot in the Premier League.
The contest began with a lot of speed, as Manchester City quickly set the tone. Erling Haaland established new precedence by scoring his 100th goal for City in a mere 105 appearances. In the 9th minute, the Norwegian striker caught a neat through ball from Savinho and calmly slotted it past David Raya to give City an advantage.
Still, Arsenal acted rapidly. The play had just been disrupted when Riccardo Calafiori, playing his first full Premier League match, executed a breathtaking 25-yard shot that found its way into the top-left corner in the 22nd minute, evening the score at 1-1. Arsenal exploited their momentum, and later, Gabriel Magalhaes gave them the lead, heading home from a well-delivered Bukayo Saka corner at the far post.
Arsenal’s chances suffered a blow just before the interval when Leandro Trossard was issued his second yellow card for kicking the ball away in frustration. With ten men left, Arsenal faced a non-stop onslaught from City during the second half. The Gunners defended with great determination, stifling the hosts for a great deal of the first half, but the pressure eventually took its toll in the final seconds of added time. John Stones scored a last-minute equalizer in the 98th minute, breaking Arsenal's spirits and resulting in a tie in points.
