Manchester City Injury Crisis: Guardiola Left with 13 Fit Players After League Cup Elimination

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that he only has “13 players” available after their League Cup run was cut short by a difficult 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. This latest development can be rated as another misfortune to City’s increasing list of injuries which has seen Guardiola say, “We are in trouble.”

In that match, City had its misfortunes with Savinho, Ruben Dias, and Manuel Akanji on the receiving end of injuries. Savinho was substituted by an injury in the 63rd minute and Dias left the pitch at half time while Akanji did not start the match after a calf strain in the warm-up. Although starting with a very young squad, City battled Spurs, and Nico O’Reilly nearly equalized but was saved by a goal-line clearance by Yves Bissouma.

“We are down to 13 players,” Guardiola said. Last week it was tough, we had to struggle and the guys were left with problems.” It’s tough; we have never witnessed such a myriad of injuries in the nine years that I have been at this club."

Losing six first-team players, including Haaland, benched for the match, City has even more problems with the absence of central midfielders, such as Rodri, out for the season with an ACL injury, and Kevin De Bruyne, out until after the international break. Kyle Walker, Oscar Bobb, Jeremy Doku, and Jack Grealish have all missed recent games as well, leaving Guardiola with a few options.

“We will have two goalkeepers and Haaland for training tomorrow,” he added. "We don’t have much else. If Savinho’s injury will prove to be serious then it will be another big setback.”

However, Guardiola was proud of his team as they are still fighting for their places in both the English Premier League and the Champions League. ”The players are taking charge, supporting each other, and making any effort they can to sustain us,” he said. “They are giving all they have and I will never forget that they are playing with injuries and are still concentrating.”

City fans, though they are equally irritated at the current injury problems, will come in bigger numbers to support their team in this crisis. Manchester City tickets will be in high demand as fans will be looking to encourage their team.
