Manchester United 1-0 Fulham: Joshua Zirkzee Scores Last-Gasp Winner on Premier League Debut

Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to net a stoppage-time winner in his first Premier League game as Manchester United beat Fulham 1-0 in the opening game of the season. The summer signing from Bologna came off the bench to make the difference and help Erik ten Hag’s side get three vital points in front of the delighted Old Trafford crowd. The match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, with Fulham defending well all through the match. The first clear-cut opportunity fell to the visitors when Kenny Tete’s shot was saved by Andre Onana while Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes was twice denied by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno. Fernandes also came close to scoring when he shot at the side netting and Casemiro was also wasteful with several attempts. United kept on forcing the issue after the break and Leno was again making important saves, saving attempts from Mount and Fernandes. Manchester United was struggling for ideas and the clock was against them as Fulham’s defense was solid and the feeling of desperation began to set in. But the entering of Zirkzee in the 61st minute was a big boost for the team. Despite being rather inactive for the most part of the match, the Dutch striker rose to the occasion towards the end. In stoppage time, Garnacho delivered a great low cross from the left flank and Zirkzee made a brilliant touch to divert the ball home, beyond Leno. We were in the mood for some quality and this was exactly what United required to get their season off to a flyer.

Manchester United signed Joshua Zirkzee in the summer and he showed why the club spent big money on him with his goal. Although the young forward did not have much impact on the game after coming on, the kid proved that he is clinical when it mattered most which was a problem United had last season. His composed finish gives the Red Devils a flying start to the campaign, and the fans will be hoping that this will be the start of something big.
