Manchester United Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe Wants a Decision on Old Trafford’s Future by End of the Year

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to decide on the future of Old Trafford this year. The legendary stadium has been an object of controversy regarding its problems such as the roof which leaks and the outer look which has seemingly aged over the years; this has made Ratcliffe support the construction of a new stadium for the club. In order to identify the possibilities, he has created the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force. This task force that is under the chairmanship of Lord Sebastian Coe and which includes other notable personalities like the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham and former United defender, Gary Neville has sat four times. The main decision which was put on the table is whether the club should continue with the Old Trafford stadium and renovate it or construct a new stadium from the ground up. Club sources suggest that redevelopment of the existing stadium would be around £ 1. 2 billion and last longer than building a new 100000-seater stadium, for which it would cost roughly £2 billion. Ratcliffe has been very clear on this to BBC, ‘It is about time that someone constructed a national stadium in the north of England'. Sky Sports says that a new stadium would be constructed on the land owned by the club beside the Old Trafford to enable the team to stay and play in the current structure as the new one is being developed. It currently has a seating capacity of 74,310, though it has been seen in a rather poor state; this was evidenced by a leaking roof that led to a flood during a premier league match against Arsenal last season. In case a new stadium is to be constructed, accommodating a hundred thousand people it will be the second largest in Europe and the largest in UK after Barcelona’s Nou Camp which was recently expanded to accommodate 105,000 people. United have talked to people associated with the regeneration projects of Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadiums for information on the new stadium. The club was also satisfied with the work carried out at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles where they recently faced Arsenal in a pre-season friendly match.
