Manchester United’s manager Erik Ten Hag was sacked today after a string of bad results. This sacking makes it the fourth one at Old Trafford since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Ten Hag, who joined United in April 2022, is in the line of managers such as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who failed to make United regain its premier league dominance. Now, as the club prepares for the next Premier League match against Chelsea, the search for the successor of Ten Hag starts, and for the time being, Ruud van Nistelrooy is in charge of the team.
Ten Hag was sucked after a series of poor displays, the latest being the 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham, and that loss pushed Manchester United to the 14th position in the English Premier League table. The club released a statement to appreciate Ten Hag for his effort as he helped the club to end a long dry spell by winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. However, speaking of the Dutchman, it is worth noting that his time at United was rather inconsistent, and the team constantly experienced some troubles in securing a stable position in the league.
‘Manchester United men’s first team manager Erik ten Hag has left,’ the club said. ‘We would like to place on record our appreciation for all the efforts put in by Erik during his tenure with the organization,’ the club was quoted as saying in a statement that also added ‘We wish him well in his future endeavors.’ With van Nistelrooy taking the interim managerial position, the club will start three searches for a permanent manager to lead the Red Devils.
According to reports, United had planned to allow Ten Hag enough time to adapt to the new sporting structure at the club following changes made by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. However, a tough campaign with terrible defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham, both by 3-0, coupled with other problems like a long list of injuries, forced the club to make a change.
Ten Hag was quite voluble about the squad’s issues and stated that the absence of Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire due to injuries has had a negative bearing on United. However, in the end, outcomes on the field were quite different. As much as the 54-year-old has steered United to a potential third place in the 2022/23 season and the club’s first major silverware in six seasons, his second season was underwhelming, and the team ended at the eighth spot, their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League.
This managerial change comes at a time when United is at a crossroads in the season, and expectations are on the team to deliver under new leadership.
