Martin Odegaard Suffers Ankle Sprain Against Austria, Norway Manager Stale Solbakken Confirms – 'It Looked Painful'

Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard is likely to miss the North London derby on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur after he was forced off in Norway’s Nations League win over Austria. The regular starting midfielder of the club and the national team was replaced in the 67th minute due to an ankle injury. However, Norway was able to win 2-1 with the help of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland’s last-gasp strike that puts Norway second in their Nations League group.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken later said that Odegaard had been taken off the pitch due to an “ankle sprain” in the match. The Arsenal captain was substituted due to an injury and at the time of his substitution the two teams 1-1, thanks to a goal by Austria’s Marcel Sabitzer. Haaland then scored the decisive goal but there are worries about the health of Odegaard before Arsenal’s next game.

In an interview with TV2, Solbakken commented on the injury:

“It looked painful in the locker room,” Solbakken said. “We know it was an ankle sprain. It can be okay if, apart from the ligaments, nothing is torn, but I do not think [Mikel] Arteta will congratulate me tonight. ”

Odegaard’s possible absence is a major concern for Arsenal, who will play against their rivals Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s team has not lost a single match in the English Premier League this season, having defeated Wolverhampton, Aston Villa and drew the match with Brighton. As of now, they stand at the fourth position on the English Premier League only two points behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arsenal will also start their UEFA Champions League next Wednesday against Atalanta. The timing of Odegaard’s injury is not the best as the gunners will be looking forward to building on that good start to the season.

Norway’s team doctor, Ola Sand, suggested further medical checks could be necessary:

‘He has a small ankle sprain,’ Sand said. “We will see, maybe we use ultrasound to look at it. If we are unsure, there will be an MRI tomorrow. ”
