Paris Saint-Germain's star player, Kylian Mbappe, has informed the club of his intention to depart at the end of the season, according to a source close to the club. Mbappe, who joined the Parisian team in 2017 from Monaco, extended his contract until 2024 last year but declined to activate a clause allowing him to stay for another year in Parc des Princes last summer.
The source revealed, "Agreement on the terms of departure still needs to be fully reached," and the club and Mbappe will announce the decision officially "once everything is finalized in the coming months."
Mbappe will leave Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent unless the parties negotiated last summer regarding an agreement where the player would forgo a portion of his contract bonuses, valued at "tens of millions" of dollars, are settled.
After seven seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe, who has become the club's all-time leading scorer, is seeking a new adventure, with Real Madrid being the likely destination.
Mbappe and Real Madrid have engaged in negotiations in 2019, 2021, and even in 2022 when Real Madrid President Florentino Perez attempted to sign him, but his efforts were met with rejection.
In the summer of 2022, it was announced that Mbappe agreed to join Real Madrid by numerous media outlets before extending his contract with the Parisian club for another two years.
In 2023, it was also announced that the deal was sealed, with some French media outlets claiming Mbappe's desire to join Madrid immediately. The latter responded with "lies..." in bold letters on Twitter at the time. Currently, Real Madrid is commonly known as "Los Blancos."
For Paris Saint-Germain, the departure of their prominent star, just a year after the Brazilian Neymar left for Saudi side Al-Hilal and the Argentine Lionel Messi to Inter Miami in the United States, marks the beginning of a new era for the ambitious club, always aiming to win the UEFA Champions League title without success since being Qatari-owned since 2011.
