With the new English top-flight campaign drawing near, Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta has all the reasons to be optimistic about his squad’s fitness. Arsenal finished 2nd in the previous two campaigns, and they are eager now to end their 20-year hunt for the Premier League title. The Arsenal boss believes that his team demonstrated that it is more than capable of coming prepared for the start of the new season when they play Wolves in their first game next weekend
Arsenal ended their preparation for the new season with a 2-0 win against Lyon at home in the final of the Emirates Cup. William Saliba and Gabriel scored the goals for Arsenal, both scoring headers from Declan Rice's corners. The win marked a successful end of what Arteta said was a very good pre-season campaign in which the team produced some of its best football.
Riccardo Calafiori, who signed for Arsenal only two weeks before, played for the team for the first time. The Italian international was given a good welcome by the home fans and this pleased Arteta, who said that the fans of the club were quick to warm up to the new signing.
But not all the news from the Emirates can be called positive. Takehiro Tomiyasu, the team’s key defender, will not be available for the beginning of the season because of knee problems; Arteta said that the left-back would be out for a few weeks. The manager also discussed the rumors about the forward Eddie Nketiah, who was not included in the list of the squad to face Lyon. There have been suggestions that Marseille has shown interest in him, but Arteta was quick to dismiss such rumors and said that Nketiah is still in his plan for the team.
With Arsenal now set to begin their Premier League season, the fans could hardly be more excited. The team is now looking more formidable than ever, and so many expect this to be the year when the Gunners recapture the status they once enjoyed as the kings of English football.
