Newcastle 1-1 Man City: Gordon's Penalty Sees Manchester City Drop Points at St. James' Park

In an exciting Premier League clash at St. James' Park, Anthony Gordon's composed penalty secured a 1-1 draw for Newcastle United against reigning champions Manchester City. The match was a great one, and till the last moment of the match, both teams were aiming to win, but it ended in a draw.

Manchester City went into the half time break leading by a goal to nil, a goal scored by Josko Gvardiol, the Croatian international. Gvardiol made the breakthrough in the 35th minute with a nice turn and finish that left Newcastle shot-stopper Nick Pope flat-footed. After the goal,  the first half  ended with he scoreline of 1-0 in favor of Manchester City.

After the break, Newcastle started to play much more actively and with much more aggression in their game. Newcastle was relatively ineffective in the first half creating clear opportunities and the absence of Alexander Isak was clearly visible. However the tide changed when Newcastle United were awarded a penalty in the final part of the first hour. Cool-headed, Gordon went on to equalize for Newcastle from the penalty spot.

Manchester City, who were without key players such as Kevin De Bruyne and long-term injured Rodri, seemed to be a little rusty. Even after controlling portions of the game, they could not penetrate a determined Newcastle defense in the second half. Gordon equalised and even as both teams had opportunities getting the winner the match ended 1-1.

The result has left Manchester City two points clear at the top of the Premier League table. However, other fixtures are still due over the weekend and City could slip off the top of the league depending on the outcomes. Newcastle on the other hand are placed in the top five, only three points behind the leaders and their display is enough to show that they are well capable of mixing it at the top.

City now shift focus to the continent where they are expected to be in action on Tuesday evening against Slovan Bratislava in the UEFA Champions League.
