Newcastle vs Arsenal: Can Newcastle change their history of wins against Arsenal today!

Arsenal, currently in third place, remains undefeated in the Premier League this season. A highly unlikely victory by a margin of five or more goals would propel them to the top of the table. In their recent home game, the Gunners secured a dominant 5-0 win against Sheffield United, but they did suffer a 3-1 defeat to West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle, currently in seventh place, started the season slowly but has shown great improvement lately. They are unbeaten in their last six games, winning four of them. Despite a 2-2 draw against Wolves in their last outing, the Magpies are high on confidence after a remarkable 3-0 away win against Manchester United in the midweek Carabao Cup fixture. Stay tuned for live coverage of this Premier League clash at St. James' Park as Newcastle United hosts Arsenal.

Let’s take a look at today’s match highlights:

First-half begins!!!

  • In the 5th minute, Nketiah shows great movement, making a darting run into the box to meet Martinelli's cross, but Schar is alert and clears the danger with a well-timed header for Newcastle.
  • In the 10th minute, Joelinton suffers an injury and heads to the sideline for treatment, but it takes over 30 seconds for the referee to allow him back onto the pitch. He's now back in action for Newcastle.
  • In the 17th minute, Almiron applies intense pressure on Gabriel, forcing him into a hurried and deflected clearance. However, a shove from Almiron results in a free-kick for Arsenal, allowing them to escape the pressure.
  • In the 22nd minute, Saka delivers a corner, and Pope punches it only partially clear. Jorginho attempts a volley on the follow-up, but he sends it well over the crossbar for Chelsea.
  • In the 29th minute, a golden opportunity for Newcastle! Guimaraes sends a high ball to the back post, where Burn heads it back across the goal. Wilson is presented with a volleying chance from close range, but he fires it over the bar with Raya out of position. The offside flag is also raised, so even if it had gone in, it wouldn't have counted.
  • In the 37th minute, Havertz makes a reckless and unnecessary challenge on Longstaff, resulting in a heated altercation between both teams. The referee issues Havertz a yellow card, and he's fortunate not to receive a red card for his tackle.
  • Gordon's reaction to Havertz's challenge leads to a brawl involving players from both teams. As a result, the Newcastle winger is also shown a yellow card by the referee.
  • In the 38th minute, Longstaff, who was the recipient of Havertz's reckless challenge, appeals to the referee and ends up receiving a yellow card for his actions.
  • In the 39th minute, Schar's comments to the referee are met with disapproval, and the Newcastle defender is shown a yellow card as well. The last few minutes have been quite perplexing, and it appears that referee Stuart Atwell hasn't made many friends among the Newcastle players and fans with his decisions.
  • In the 41st minute, there’s a great opportunity for Newcastle! Trippier makes an overlapping run to receive Almiron's back-heel pass and delivers a cross. Wilson attempts a glancing header, but it deflects out to Gordon. Unfortunately, Gordon can't get a shot off in time as Raya pounces on the loose ball.
  • In the 45+2 minute, Martinelli shows some skill as he cuts inside off the left past Trippier. Despite having options in the box, he opts to take a shot, but it's a tame effort that goes straight into the waiting gloves of Pope.
  • In the 45+4 minute, Almiron and Trippier link up again, and Trippier's cross leaves Raya in a vulnerable position. However, Saliba rises confidently and clears the danger with a strong defensive header.

Second-half begins!!!

  • In the 47th minute, Arsenal initiates a counter-attack, with Rice creating space for Martinelli. Martinelli tries to go around Livramento on the outside, but the Newcastle substitute does well to shield the ball and deny Arsenal a corner.
  • In the 54th minute, Newcastle launches a swift counter-attack after Nketiah struggles to get a shot off in their box. Wilson demonstrates excellent hold-up play, enabling Almiron to receive the ball and make a powerful run through the middle. Almiron then connects with Gordon, but the winger hesitates in taking his shot, and White manages to make a crucial block. Newcastle continues to struggle in the final third.
  • In the 62nd minute, Newcastle makes a substitution, with Callum Wilson coming off the pitch, and Joseph George Willock replaces him.
  • In the 63rd minute, Newcastle makes a substitution, with Miguel Ángel Almirón Rejala coming off the pitch, and Jacob Kai Murphy replaces him.
  • In the 64th minute, Newcastle appears to have taken the lead, with Anthony Gordon finding the back of the net following a header by Joelinton. The goal stands, and it's 1-0 to Newcastle.
  • In the 68th minute, Newcastle's goal stands after VAR reviews multiple queries, and the lead is confirmed at 1-0 in favor of the home team.
  • In the 73rd minute, Ben White is replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Tomiyasu moves to right-back for Arsenal.
  • In the 79th minute, Jacob Murphy is substituted off for Matt Ritchie for Newcastle. Fabio Vieira replaces Jorginho for Arsenal.
  • In the 85th minute, Newcastle's efficiency in front of goal has been a key factor in their recent success, and it appears that they continue to make the most of their scoring opportunities in this match. Their ability to convert chances into goals bodes well for their future performances in the Premier League.
  • In the 86th minute, Trossard had a chance to test the Newcastle defense with a shot from outside the box, but Livramento and Lascelles combined to block his effort and deny Brighton an opportunity on goal.
  • In the 88th minute, Guimaraes receives a yellow card for a push to the face of Vieira in a physical altercation, and this booking comes after a previous incident in the first half where some believed he should have been cautioned as well.
  • In the 90+1 minute, Livramento is booked after a mistimed challenge that caught Martinelli on the touchline. The referee shows him a yellow card for the foul.
  • In the 90+6 minute, Martinelli sets up Zinchenko for a cross from the byline, but Lascelles intercepts the cut-back and clears the danger for Newcastle.

Newcastle secures a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Arsenal, handing the Gunners their first Premier League defeat of the season. The lone goal, scored by Gordon, came after a lengthy VAR check. Despite Arsenal's pressure, they couldn't find an equalizer, allowing Newcastle to climb to sixth in the table. Arsenal remains in third place, missing the opportunity to go top of the league.
