Paulo Fonseca Ascends to AC Milan Throne: Ex-Lille and Roma Maestro Succeeds Stefano Pioli

Paulo Fonseca is now the boss of AC Milan after being introduced by Lille. The Portuguese enters the team at the break left by Stefano Pioli, who has left after an unforgettable five-year stay. This will be Fonseca’s first season in Serie A, although he managed Roma in the Italian top-flight for two campaigns before moving to France.

AC Milan heralded Fonseca’s arrival with a grand announcement: AC Milan officially announced Paulo Fonseca as the Head Coach of the men’s first team, he has signed a three-year deal with the Milanese Club, Welcome to AC Milan, Paulo and his team.

Fonseca returns to Italy with the experience from his three-year stay with the Roma from 2019-2021 and a two-year stay at Lille. He succeeds Stefano Pioli who led Milan to Serie A triumph in 2022, but the team was second in the previous season, 19 points behind city rivals, Inter. Inter also entrenched themselves as the dominant force in Italian football by winning the scudetto in the April’s Milan derby.

Fonseca’s journey was from Portugal where he was at Pacos Ferreira, then Porto then Braga before joining Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine in the 2016 season. For Shakhtar Donetsk, he won three consecutive league titles. At Roma, he was able to get only 5th and 7th position in the Italian Serie A in two seasons.

In Lille, Fonseca took the team to a 5th position in his first season and moved up to the 4th position the next season and earned a Champions League ticket. Also, Lille was in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals and lost to Aston Villa on penalties.
