David Coote: Premier League Referee Sacked by PGMOL After Klopp Comments

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has officially terminated the employment of Premier League referee David Coote following an investigation into derogatory comments he allegedly made about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

PGMOL Terminates Coote’s Employment

David Coote, who joined the EPL officiating team during the 2017-18 season, was suspended in November 2023 after a video surfaced online. The video allegedly captured Coote making offensive remarks about Klopp, referencing Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Burnley in 2020—a game Coote officiated.

The PGMOL confirmed the decision in an official statement released Monday:

"Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect. David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable. Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare."

Coote has the right to appeal the decision, but the outcome signifies the serious nature of the allegations and their impact on professional refereeing standards.

Investigations into David Coote

The controversy first arose when a social media video featuring Coote allegedly using expletives about Klopp went viral. The Football Association (FA) and the PGMOL launched immediate investigations.

A subsequent video, allegedly from Coote’s time officiating at Euro 2024, emerged, leading UEFA to suspend him as well. This compounded his troubles and resulted in further scrutiny.

David Coote officiated notable games, including the 2023 EFL Cup Final between Manchester United and Newcastle United, but this incident has cast a shadow over his professional achievements.
