Tottenham Hotspur Secure Loan Signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich

Spurs Complete Deadline-Day Move for Bayern’s Mathys Tel

Tottenham Hotspur have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season. The 19-year-old forward, who had initially turned down a move to Spurs, made a last-minute U-turn on deadline day to join THFC.

The loan deal includes a £45.7 million purchase option, and should Tottenham choose to activate it, Tel would sign a six-year contract. He will wear the No. 11 shirt for the remainder of the season.

A Dramatic Transfer Window Twist

Tel had been linked with several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Aston Villa, as the January transfer window neared its close. Initially, it seemed Tottenham were out of the race, but they managed to convince the young French forward to make the switch to North London.

The move is subject to international clearance and the securing of a work permit, but Spurs expect no issues in finalizing the transfer.

Tel’s Journey to Tottenham

The highly-rated Frenchman joined Bayern Munich from Rennes in 2022 and has since scored 16 goals in 83 appearances for the German giants. However, under manager Vincent Kompany, he has struggled for game time this season, making just two Bundesliga starts while playing understudy to Harry Kane.

Tel made history with Rennes in August 2021, becoming the youngest player to feature for the club at just 16 years old. After making 10 appearances in Ligue 1, he joined Bayern in July 2022. A month later, he became the youngest goal scorer in Bayern’s history, and by September 2022, he was also the youngest player to start a league game for the German club, marking the occasion with a goal.

With a fresh start at THFC, Tel will look to make an impact in Ange Postecoglou’s squad as they push for a strong finish in the Premier League.
