Barcelona got back to winning ways in style with an emphatic 5-1 win over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica after their UEFA Champions League disappointment. The Blaugrana, with Lewandowski Raphinha scoring twice, remained unbeaten in La Liga season and moved four points ahead of Real Madrid to reach 18 points in six games.
The hosts began the match at a good pace and believed they had opened the scoring when Jeremy Pino produced a clever finish but the goal was ruled offside. It was a tight match between both sides with Villarreal posing a big attacking force but it was Barcelona that scored the opening goal in the 20th minute. Lewandowski made it 1-0 by slotting in a pinpoint pass by Pablo Torre.
Lewandowski made it 2-0 for Barcelona 15 minutes later with an overhead kick, his sixth goal for the club this season. But Villarreal was not going to roll over and play dead and struck back almost immediately. Barcelona was breached by former Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe and he found Ayoze Perez who did not miss making the score 2-1.
The yellow submarines had several chances to level the score, and Pepe was causing a lot of trouble for Barcelona's defenders. However, just as the tide started to turn for the hosts, Pablo Torre restored Barcelona’s three-goal cushion with a low-driven shot from outside the box in the 58th minute.
Barcelona were close again but Lewandowski could not score a hat trick after Lamine Yamal was awarded a penalty kick. The Polish striker’s attempt hit the post to maintain the score line 3-1. Raphinha then rose to the occasion, scoring two goals in the latter part of the match to make the final scoreline. His first scored in the 74th minute, a hard shot that went past the post and into the bottom left corner, and the second in the 84th minute after Yamal put in a great cross.
Barcelona’s emphatic victory kept their unbeaten streak in La Liga going while also underlining their goal-scoring strength. The match result puts Barcelona in the commanding position at the top of the table and Villarreal will look to redeem themselves in their next games.
