Vincent Kompany aims to infuse an aggressive, courageous spirit into his Bayern Munich squad. Officially presented as Bayern's manager at the Allianz Arena on Thursday, the former Burnley boss outlined his vision for a combative and fearless team. Joined by Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and director of sport Max Eberl, the 38-year-old's appointment has sparked significant interest, with the club viewing him as a promising young coach poised to lead them back to glory.
Kompany's commitment to aggression and teamwork shone in his remarks. "I grew up on the streets of Brussels, in Anderlecht's academy," he stated. "You have to be a team. I want my players to have courage, to be aggressive. I want us to play like that, it's my character. We will maintain that for entire games."
Max Eberl, Bayern's director of sport, mirrored Kompany's sentiments, highlighting the club's desire to dominate and play assertively. "As FC Bayern, we strive to be dominant and aggressive. I'm thrilled that it worked out with Vincent. We've secured one of the most intriguing coaches in Europe."
Kompany's drive and determination stood out. "I wake up motivated every day, aiming to improve the lads. What propels me are the times when things falter. Privately and professionally, that's my nature. Bayern is a great club. I want to take everyone on this journey. I don't just want the best players, but the best team. We aim to win every game. That must always be our priority."
The new Bayern manager also reflected on his connection with Pep Guardiola, under whom he played at Manchester City. "I've played at the highest level and I want to impart that to my players. I would never compare myself to Pep Guardiola. He shaped my career. I've recently spoken to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness, and they back me. But I want everyone to believe in me through my work on the pitch during my tenure here."
Kompany has a history with Bayern and Germany star Leroy Sane, having played with him before Sane's return to the Bundesliga in 2020. "We had great times in Manchester. I wasn't just captain at City; I was more than that. I will extract everything from him and every player."
Despite Burnley's relegation under Kompany, optimism abounds that his philosophy and methods will flourish at Bayern. "I coached one of the youngest teams in Belgium and one of the smallest in England. What I bring will help the players improve. I have a clear vision and will implement it here in Germany. In our first year at Burnley in the Championship, we set a record points tally. In our second year in the Premier League, we had one of the smallest budgets. We didn't change much after promotion. I gave it my all. I've remained the same. I have no plans to change here either."
