Brazil is set to face Spain in an international friendly this week under the slogan ‘One Skin’ as part of an anti-racism campaign. Ahead of the game, Brazil and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr addressed the media about the racism he has encountered in Spain and its impact on his passion for football.
The 23-year-old broke down in tears as he candidly discussed the challenges he has faced due to racial abuse during his time in Spain. Vinicius, who will feature for Brazil against Spain in the upcoming friendly, opened up about the emotional toll of experiencing racism on and off the pitch.
“It’s something very sad what I have been going through here,” Vinicius said, reflecting on his ordeal. “It’s tough. I’ve been fighting against this for a long time. It’s exhausting because you feel like you are alone. I’ve made so many official complaints but no one is ever punished. More and more I’m losing my desire to play. But I’ll keep fighting."
Despite the adversity, Vinicius remains resolute in his commitment to the sport and his team. He emphasized his determination to continue playing for Real Madrid, the club he regards as the best in the world, and to score goals that defy the bigotry he faces.
“I have never thought about leaving Spain, because that would be giving the racists what they want,” Vinicius asserted. “I will stay at the best club in the world, scoring as many goals as I can so they keep watching me."
Responding to comments from his Real Madrid teammate Dani Carvajal, who defended Spain's stance against racism, Vinicius acknowledged that Spain is not inherently racist but highlighted the prevalence of racism within stadiums. While Vinicius has sadly become accustomed to racial abuse, he remains hopeful for change and dreams of a future where players can compete without fear of discrimination.
