West Ham 2-1 Manchester United: Bowen’s Late Penalty Earns Hammers’ Victory and Ramps up Pressure on Ten Hag

The Hammers defeated the Red Devils 2-1 on Sunday in a captivating Premier League match that will only increase pressure on United manager Erik ten Hag. In front of a 62,477 crowd at London Stadium, West Ham fans erupted in celebration as Jarrod Bowen converted a penalty in the dying embers of the match to boot Manchester United down the table even lower.

The two sides were heading into this match to get a victory that will see them rise in the ranks of the Premier League table after poor initial performances this season. United began the match at a fast pace and was able to enjoy most of the first-half possession and had several opportunities. Garnacho tested the goalkeeper with a shot that hit the post, while Casemiro, Rashford as well as Dalot all had attempts that missed the target.

However, it was West Ham that scored first through Crysencio Summerville. His sharp finish put the Hammers at 1-0 ahead and this was good music to the ear of the home fans. United did not take a long time to respond to this move as well. Casemiro, who has made a name for himself for getting into the right position at the right time, duly responded with a match-leveling goal and renewed United’s desire to take something back to their home ground.

The second half proved to be an end-to-end stuff, though West Ham United’s defense was solid against a resurgent Manchester United forward line. The drama reached the climax of this game as it seemed that the match would end in a draw at some time. Matthijs de Ligt committed a foul inside the box and West Ham was awarded a penalty which would have given them the victory in the match. Bowen took the penalty without any hesitation and put the ball beyond the reach of Andre Onana, which brought cheers from the home fans.

West Ham fans exited the stadium in great moods driven by the ability of their team to stand firm and of course Bowen’s last-minute genius. The consequence has been to increase pressure on Erik Ten Hag after his Manchester United team has had an unimpressive start to the season.
