It was another dramatic finish for Manchester City as John Stones got the winner for his side in the 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux that put the Premier League champions back to the top of the table above Liverpool. Wolves got their first goal by Jorgen Strand Larsen, while Josko Gvardiol scored an equalizer before the break. It appeared that Wolves would have to settle for a difficult earned draw, but Stones scored in the last possible moments of the match.

Larsen opened the game deliciously for Gary O’Neil’s Wolves by tapping in at the back post following a flowing move in the 7th minute. Wolves, who have been struggling in recent matches, started with a back five to shut down Pep Guardiola’s side. However, City proved their fighting spirit again as Gvardiol fired home from range on the brink of the interval.

The second half was a different ball game as Wolves stood firm, and O’Neil’s change of strategy proved vital as they blanked City. Goalkeeper Jose Sa was outstanding, as he made two decisive saves to deny Wolves. For most of the afternoon, it seemed that Wolves could leave Etihad with a crucial point, despite City controlling the ball most of the time.

However, in the last few seconds before the full-time whistle, John Stones rose above all the others to head home a corner and send the Wolves home disappointed. VAR reviewed the goal to check whether Bernardo Silva who was at an offside position, affected the play. After a review, the goal stood, much to the anger of O’Neil who was booked for protesting.

This win saw City move two points clear of Liverpool, who are scheduled to play Chelsea later in the day. The Wolves are still 17th, despite the encouraging performance seen in the game, and they will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
