Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa: Emery's Men Shine in Dominant Champions League Return

Aston Villa opened their comeback to the UEFA Champions League after the new season by thrashing BSC Young Boys 3-0 in Bern, Switzerland. This was Villa’s first participation in Europe’s top competition since 1983 when the competition was still called the European Cup, and Villa was quick to show that they were not out of place in this company.

The match began on the artificial turf of Wankdorf Stadium, and although Young Boys began with a lot of intensity, it was the Unai Emery’s men who were more clinical in front of goal. The Swiss side had the early dominance with Ebrima Colley troubling the Villa defenders, but the visitors failed to break the deadlock past Martinez.

It was Villa who finally found a way to break the deadlock through a beautiful corner kick. Youri Tielemans, thanks to his positioning, was able to place a shot that was quite accurate and beyond the reach of the Young Boys keeper, which put the away fans into joy. Soon after that, Jacob Ramsey made it 2-0 with a good finish, which put the Premier League side comfortably ahead at the break.

As much as the hosts tried to turn the score in the second half, Villa was always in charge. Young Boys tried to equalize and searched for an opening to penetrate through Villa’s well-organized defense. As the match continued it was Villa who would make the score beyond any shadow of a doubt. In the last part of the match, Amadou Onana scored a great goal from a distance and added the last drop of the Champions League performance.

Two goals were denied to each Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran for handball but Villa saw off the challenge with a three-goal lead to mark their return to the Champions League.
