West Ham vs Newcastle: Can Newcastle Win This Weekend?

In the last few weeks, Newcastle United has seen quite some progress. They kept their winning streak going by crushing Sheffield United 8-0 and winning in the League Cup against Manchester City. At next, they were absolutely brilliant and played against Paris Saint-Germain, and eventually won 4-1. What's more, they are preparing for a match against West Ham United on the Premier League on Sunday.

In the first leg of the Champions League match, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón and Fabian Schär were the players who scored the goals and that victory was the Newcastle United's biggest win ever in the history of Champions League. The coach of the team, Eddie Howe, needs to figure out when he will replace the line up for the next game against West Ham but whatever happens the fans expect more goals.

Arguably, Newcastle is the top scorer in the Premier League this season, with more players than any other team registering goals. They had 20 different players on the field, and for ten of them it was in the forms of goals. Scoring from as many as eight players in their recent game against Sheffield United contributed to the fact that they ended up with this one.

One player who might be restored in Newcastle's lineup is that of Callum Wilson. PSG game was not attended by him as he had a small injury in his hamstring. Wilson has currently more goals against West Ham in the Premier League than any other team. So far, he has 12 goals in 13 matches against them. He is the second highest goalscorer against West Ham in the Premier League, after only Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. Wilson's total of seven goals for West Ham is impressive considering the fact that five of those goals were scored in away matches.

If he has recovered, then Wilson can play with Isak and Almirón in the attacking formation. However, Eddie Howe as the manager has some weighty decisions to make following a number of difficulties. Joao Felix could be benched because of the hamstring problem he had in the previous game against Burnley. Anthony Gordon is suspended because he gets five yellow cards playing in English Premier League games. In addition, Harvey Barnes is not in the squad, due to his long-term injury.

West Ham, with the leadership of David Moyes, has got 13 points from seven league games, which is the club's strongest start since 2015-16 in the Premier League. In the early period, they had 13 points too and ranked seventh under Slaven Bilić. If they win this week it would be the best result of their eighth game since 1999-2000 where they had 16 points.

Their brand is strong and it goes beyond the domestic leagues; they’ve also been successful in Europe. The team's 17th match in a row without a loss in UEFA games was their victory against Freiburg in the Europa League playing-offs. This also includes the team's participation in last year's Europa Conference League. This undefeated series is the first in its kind for all English teams.

With the help of some English internationals including Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse, West Ham's impressive start may be partly due to the duo's efforts. The game against Sheffield United saw Bowen's name on the scoresheet, a testament to his quality that has yielded 8 goal involvements in his last 9 Premier League matches (6 goals, 2 assists). While Bowen did not score in the last seven league encounters with Newcastle, he has drawn a blank against Tottenham as well, which is the only team he has played more matches without scoring (eight).

Head-to-Head Statistics: West Ham vs Newcastle

There were some tough times at the Upton Park, but we have been rather successful at the London Stadium, whenever we met West Ham there. Currently, they are one of the strongest opponents at the ground of the Hammers with two wins, one draw and one defeat in six Premier League matches. This utters a remarkable stat, as they had won all these previous 14 matches at West Ham's former home ground, with seven defeats and the other three games drawn.

Overall, Newcastle has had made positive trips to London on the past few times. Last season their London home form was immaculate, unbeaten in their 7 Premier League games in the capital with 4 wins and a draw each. While they did suffer defeat in the League Cup final against Man United in February which was played at Wembley Stadium, they went on to win the cup again in April. They have never been able to involve eight matches of away trips to London in the Premier League without losing.

Despite their recent spate of defeats, the Magpies can take heart from their last encounter when Newcastle came out on top 5-1 at this venue earlier this season. Callum Wilson and Joelinton scored twice each, while Alexander Isak put in a single goal. West Ham fans, however, could not help but cheer when Kurt Zouma scored, but it was just for a moment.

Newcastle who won in only three of their recent eight matches against West Ham in the league is the Hammers’ most challenging rival. They've stood on a deadlock thrice and lost four times as their only victory was a 4-2 score at St James' Park in August 2021.
