History And Design

The stadium officially opened on 3 September 1898. It was referred to as the best ground in the country, known for its fine, velvet carpet-like pitch, which was excavated by William Bardill. It was the first football stadium to introduce elliptically shaped goalposts and coloured seat identification, with the word “Forest” spelled out in white against the red seats. The stadium suffered severe damage in 1941 from bombing during World War II, as well as from flooding in 1947 and fire in 1968. These damages caused the loss of archives, records, trophies, and other memorabilia.

After major redevelopment in the 1990s, converting it into an all-seated stadium, the club proposed further developments and other initiatives. In 2019, a redevelopment plan suggested significant improvements and replacements, including the addition of a museum, executive boxes, lounges, and restaurants, which was subsequently put on hold. Currently, the stadium consists of four stands: the Trent End Stand, the Brian Clough Stand, the Bridgford Stand, and the Peter Taylor Stand.
