What Is the Conference League?

The UEFA Conference League is the third tier of European club football, sitting below the Champions League and the Europa League. Launched in the 2021/22 season, it was designed to give clubs from lower-ranked UEFA member associations a realistic pathway into European knockout competition. The 2025/26 edition is the fifth season and the second played under the expanded 36-team league phase format introduced in 2024/25.

The winners earn a place in the following season's Europa League and a berth in the UEFA Super Cup. Chelsea are the defending champions, having beaten Real Betis 4-1 in the 2025 final in Wroclaw, Poland. Chelsea cannot defend their title because Conference League winners automatically qualify for the Europa League the following season.

The History of the Conference League

The Conference League was created by UEFA in 2021 to provide a competitive European tournament for clubs from smaller footballing nations and lower-ranked domestic leagues. Before its launch, many of these clubs faced elimination in the early qualifying rounds of the Champions League or Europa League with little realistic prospect of reaching a group stage. The Conference League addressed this by offering a dedicated competition with its own identity, prize money and pathway to a European trophy.

The competition was initially named the UEFA Europa Conference League before being rebranded to the UEFA Conference League from the 2024/25 season. The first edition in 2021/22 was played under a 32-team group stage format. From 2024/25, this was replaced by a 36-team league phase in which each club plays six matches against six different opponents, mirroring the format changes made to the Champions League and Europa League.

Conference League All-Time Winners

Season Winner Runner-Up Score Venue
2021/22 Roma Feyenoord 1-0 Tirana, Albania
2022/23 West Ham United Fiorentina 2-1 Prague, Czechia
2023/24 Olympiacos Fiorentina 1-0 Athens, Greece
2024/25 Chelsea Real Betis 4-1 Wroclaw, Poland

Four different clubs have won the Conference League in its four editions. English clubs are the most successful nation with two titles (West Ham 2023, Chelsea 2025). Chelsea's victory made them the first club in history to have won all of UEFA's major men's club trophies: the Champions League, the Europa League, the Cup Winners' Cup, the Super Cup and the Conference League. Fiorentina hold the unwanted record of being the only club to have lost two Conference League finals (2023 and 2024) and has now reached four consecutive quarter-finals.

The 2025/26 Quarter-Finalists

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace are the sole English representative in the 2025/26 Conference League. They initially qualified for the Europa League as winners of the 2024/25 FA Cup, but UEFA moved them to the Conference League after ruling that Palace and Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League, were part of the same multi-club ownership group. Palace reached the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 aggregate victory over AEK Larnaca, with Ismaila Sarr scoring both goals, including a dramatic extra-time winner in the second leg in Cyprus.

Fiorentina

Fiorentina are in their fourth consecutive Conference League quarter-final, a record in the competition's short history. They lost the 2023 and 2024 finals and will be determined to go one step further. Paolo Vanoli's side beat Rakow 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar continue to play their "home" European matches at neutral venues due to the war in Ukraine. The quarter-final first leg against AZ Alkmaar takes place at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. They beat Lech Poznan 4-3 on aggregate in the round of 16 after leading 3-1 from the first leg.

Strasbourg and Rayo Vallecano

Both clubs have reached their first European quarter-final in decades. Strasbourg's 3-2 aggregate win over Rijeka put them in a European last eight for the first time since 1980, while Rayo Vallecano's 3-2 aggregate victory over Samsunspor marked their first European quarter-final in 25 years.

AZ Alkmaar

The Dutch club produced the most emphatic result of the round of 16 with a 6-1 aggregate demolition of Sparta Praha, including a 4-0 second-leg victory at home. Troy Parrott scored three goals across the two legs. AZ are managed by interim coach Leeroy Echteld.

AEK Athens and Mainz

AEK Athens secured their place with a 4-2 aggregate win over Celje after a commanding 4-0 first-leg victory, though they needed to withstand a second-leg fightback. Mainz broke a goalless deadlock at home against Sigma Olomouc with two second-half goals to progress 2-0 on aggregate in what is the German club's first Conference League knockout campaign.
