The Foxes started their first season back in the top tier of English football with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the King Power Stadium. Pedro Porro scored for Spurs and put them in the lead, but the Foxes equalized through a typical Jamie Vardy goal before the end of the first sixty minutes. The match was overshadowed by an injury to Rodrigo Bentancur who was taken off on a stretcher after a sickening clash of heads but he thankfully came round shortly after. Tottenham had the better of the exchanges early on and were on top for most of the first period. It proved to be a fruitful move when Pedro Porro rose high to meet James Maddison’s precisely delivered free-kick with his back to goal and head home at the back post to put Spurs in front. The London side seemed to be dominating the match and it seemed a distant hope for the Foxes to get at least a draw. But while Spurs seemed to be at ease, they were unable to turn the advantage into more goals. The latter changed after the break as Leicester came out more aggressive and pressed higher up the pitch both when they had the ball and when they did not. The Foxes did not appear to be going to equalise and then they did. Jamie Vardy, Leicester’s main man yet again, was able to get himself some room in the box and then leaped to head home a cross from Victor Kristiansen. It was a classic Vardy goal – timing his run to perfection and scoring an important goal. After the equalizer, the Foxes took control of the match and could have even won the match and taken all three points. Vardy had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper that, under normal circumstances, he would have put away easily. Then the disaster came as Bentancur suffered a nasty head injury which saw the match pause for nine minutes and the wind knocked out of the sails of both sides. Thankfully, however, the midfielder was later said to be responding to treatment and was alert and talking, to the relief of both sets of supporters. For Spurs, the return to London will be accompanied by questions about how they have allowed the game to go away from them. Concerning Leicester, the performance will be encouraging to them, especially as they are expected to fight for survival.
