How to Prepare for an Away Matchday in Milan? Following Your Club Away in San Siro

The San Siro away end changed address this summer. Inter renumbered the stadium entrances for 2026/27, entrances 7 to 10 on the west side are now exit-only, and AC Milan cut the size of their visiting section to free up seats for their own fans. Kick-off for both British visits is 21:00, the post-match hold-back has made three different English supports miss the last train in three seasons, and the car parks are now a construction site. Liverpool go in January, Sunderland in December, and the entrance, the walk and the rules differ depending on which club is the host.

Both Milan clubs are in Europe this season, in different competitions, so a UK fan could end up in either away end. Inter are in the Champions League and the Reds are the only British side visiting them in the league phase. Milan are in the Europa League, where Sunderland's first European away trip in more than half a century lands at San Siro in December.

Who is actually travelling to Milan this season

Two British clubs have San Siro in their fixture list before the knockout rounds. Liverpool visit Inter on Tuesday 19 January 2027 at 21:00 CET, matchday seven of the Champions League league phase, and the Inter Milan v Liverpool tickets page is the fixture to watch once Inter release their home sales. Sunderland visit AC Milan on Thursday 10 December 2026 at 21:00 CET, matchday six of the Europa League league phase, and AC Milan v Sunderland tickets will be the first Milan fixture many Wearside fans have ever bought. Bournemouth also drew Milan in the Europa League, but that tie is at the Vitality Stadium on 22 October, so Cherries fans do not travel.

The rest of Inter's home league-phase list is Club Brugge, Shakhtar Donetsk and Stuttgart. Milan host Benfica on 16 September and Ferencváros on 5 November before Sunderland. After January the calendar opens up: Champions League play-offs on 16/17 and 23/24 February 2027, round of 16 on 9/10 and 16/17 March, quarter-finals on 6/7 and 13/14 April and semi-finals on 27/28 April and 4/5 May, with the Europa League knockout rounds running on the Thursdays of the same weeks. With five Premier League clubs in the Champions League, another San Siro draw in spring is a reasonable bet. Neutrals in town for the Milan derby face a different ticketing system, with name checks and nationality restrictions that bite harder than the price.

One stadium, two away ends

San Siro puts away fans in the third ring, but which corner depends on who is at home. Inter's ultras occupy the Curva Nord, so Inter's visiting section is the Third Blue tier at the opposite end. Milan's ultras occupy the Curva Sud, so Milan's visiting section is the Third Green tier at the north end. The San Siro seating plan shows how the four colour-coded sides and three rings fit together.

The gates are the part that changed. Inter's guidance for 2026/27 states that the entrance numbering has been revised, entrances 7 to 10 on the west side are no longer in use and the west perimeter now serves only as an emergency exit. Three entrances are mandatory and exclusive rather than recommended: Entrance 2 for the Second Green, Entrance 3 for the Third Green and Entrance 15 bis for the Third Blue away section. AC Milan published their own arrangements on 27 August 2026. Visiting supporters have a dedicated car park at Acquatica Park on Via Airaghi (open from 17:30, €5 per car, €30 per coach, free shuttle to the ground), a dedicated route and a dedicated entrance: follow the signs for the drop-off area near the north ticket office and enter at Entrance 0-bis. Milan also confirmed that the away section has been reduced in capacity, with sections 343 to 348, 350, 353 and 354 of the Third Green now sold to home fans at every match. Entrances at Milan games are assigned by section and are not optional. The AC Milan access notice has the map. Whichever club is hosting, the entrance printed on the ticket is the one that counts, so check it the night before.

The view from the third ring, and what it costs your legs

The away seats are high. Newcastle's supporter notice for their 2023 visit warned that seating was a 15 minute walk from the turnstile with no lift access to the away area, and that is the spiral ramps and towers doing their job. Once you are up there the view is complete but distant: you see the whole pitch and the tifo in the opposite curva, you do not see faces. A protective net hangs in front of the front rows of the Third Green to stop objects being thrown at the second ring below; it was reinstated in October 2025 after Milan season ticket holders in the Second Green complained, so expect it whichever club you are visiting.

Cold is the practical issue for both British fixtures. The roof girders cover most of the third ring but the tier is open at the sides and 50 metres up, and December and January nights in Milan sit close to freezing. Bring layers rather than a big coat, because bag and search rules are strict. Inside the ground, only alcohol-free beer is sold on European nights, food is basic and the third-ring toilets are old, few and slow to clear at half-time. Eat before you travel out. • Prohibited items on the Inter list include crutches, helmets, pushchairs, large umbrellas (small pointless ones are allowed in rain), professional cameras, trolley cases, laser pointers, flares, lighters and unauthorised flags or banners.

• Wheelchair users and registered disabled supporters use the dedicated entrance next to PC4 (beside Entrance 11); clubs receive a small number of bays, 15 in Liverpool's case in December 2025.
• Smoking is banned throughout the stadium.

Getting an away ticket: allocations, credits and passports

Away tickets for European games at San Siro are not sold by Inter or Milan to visiting fans. They come through your own club from the allocation the host must provide, and English clubs distribute them on away credits or loyalty points, with a ballot at the bottom of the queue. The numbers are consistent. Liverpool received 4,401 tickets for Inter in December 2025 (plus 235 top-category seats held for players, staff and VIPs), priced at £34.25 with 15 wheelchair bays. Arsenal received 4,361 for Inter in November 2024. Newcastle received 3,900 for Milan in September 2023 at £42, and the loyalty-point threshold fell from 65 to 20 within 24 hours before a zero-point ballot cleared the rest.

Sunderland's allocation for 10 December had not been published by the club as of 10 September 2026. Two things are known: Milan reduced the away section for 2026/27, so the figure is likely to sit below Newcastle's 3,900, and Sunderland's first European away sale in more than 50 years will not be a quiet one. Liverpool's own notice for the January game is due around six weeks out, and the December 2025 process is the template: eligibility based on recorded Champions League away credits, a two-day registration window, a sale in which season ticket holders and members with one or more credits are assured a ticket, then a limited general window. Read the club's ticket news the day the draw is made, not the week of the game. The club pages for Liverpool tickets and Sunderland tickets list every fixture in both competitions.

The rule that catches people is identity. Italian law requires the ticket holder's first and last name on each ticket, and Liverpool's December 2025 notice stated that the original passport would be requested at the stadium and checked against the name, with photocopies and driving licences not accepted. Newcastle were told in 2023 that a driving licence would do; the Liverpool notice is more recent and more restrictive, so carry the passport. Liverpool also ran a collection process for 20% of bookings, selected at random, with collection at a designated point in Milan, and cancelled credits for any ticket not used, because Inter supplied attendance data back to the club. Forwarding was limited to friends and family accounts created before a cut-off date, and any ticket forwarded to an account registered in Italy could be cancelled. • Passport details, country of birth, travel dates, method of travel and accommodation address were all required at checkout for every traveller in Liverpool's December 2025 sale.
• Tickets were issued as PDFs to the lead booker from six days before kick-off; Arsenal's Inter tickets in 2024 were PDFs that could be printed or scanned from a phone.
• Clubs reserve the right to void tickets forwarded to accounts they cannot verify as their own supporters, so do not buy a forwarded away ticket from a stranger.

Sitting with the home fans: what Inter and Milan actually enforce

An English fan can buy a home-sector ticket for a Serie A game as a neutral. For a European tie against their own club, the same purchase is deliberately blocked. Every ticket at San Siro is nominal. Inter's stadium notice for the Liverpool game in December 2025 required valid ID at the pre-filtering checkpoints so staff could match the name on the ticket to the person entering, and Inter's 2026/27 Base ticket allows a single name change for a fee of €10 to €20 depending on the tier, with the Plus ticket including one, both subject to restrictions imposed by the club or the public security authorities. For European games against English opposition, home-sector sales are policed by nationality: hospitality resellers carried an explicit "away team passport holders not allowed" condition on Inter v Arsenal packages in November 2024, and the pre-filter is where a UK passport in a home sector gets found. Treat a home ticket for 19 January or 10 December as a refusal waiting to happen, not a gamble.

The Tessera del Tifoso confusion belongs here too. A tourist does not need an Italian fan card to buy a home-sector ticket for a normal league game; the card matters for the away sector at high-risk domestic fixtures and for season tickets. It has no bearing on a UEFA away allocation, which is handled entirely through the visiting club. A fan following their club has one route: the club allocation. Getting to San Siro when the car parks are a building site

Both clubs are telling everyone to use public transport this season, because car parking around the ground is being progressively removed for the new stadium works and pedestrian access along Via dei Piccolomini is closed. For the away end at either club, the M5 lilac line to its San Siro Stadio terminus is the direct option, and Inter list it as the recommended route for Blue sectors. The alternative is the M1 red line to Lotto, which Inter recommend for Green sectors, followed by a 15 minute walk down Via Caprilli. Tram 16 from the city centre stops at Stadio Meazza and is the scenic choice, but on a European night it fills before it reaches you. From the Duomo, allow 30 minutes door to gate on the Metro: M1 to Lotto, change to M5 for three stops, or M1 to Lotto and walk.

Fares are simple. An ATM single is €2.20 (about £1.90) and covers 90 minutes across Metro, tram and bus; a day ticket is €7.60 (about £6.50) and contactless bank cards cap automatically at the same €7.60, with a tap-out required at the exit gate or you are charged the maximum fare. On match nights ATM adds extra M5 and M1 services, and the Sport Mediaset advice to leave 20 minutes earlier than you think is sound: the pre-filter ID checks at the away entrance are slow, and Inter opened the Arsenal away gate at 18:15 for a 21:00 kick-off in January 2026, with general gates at 19:00. Be at Entrance 15 bis or Entrance 0-bis by 19:30 at the latest and you will be in your seat with time to spare.

Getting back after a 21:00 kick-off

Away fans are held back at San Siro after the final whistle while the home crowd clears, and the length of that hold is not published in advance. The National Police Chiefs' Council's European Awaydays fan survey, which collects English supporters' feedback on every European away trip, records that three different fan groups over three seasons reported "excessive hold backs" at San Siro that meant supporters missed the last train, with crushing at the exit, no communication and, in one account, a 7 km walk back across the city after a 21:00 kick-off. The survey's own comment is that release should be coordinated with local transport. It has not been, so plan as if it will not be. The 2024/25 survey is public.

The timings are tight. A 21:00 kick-off finishes around 22:55. A 30 to 45 minute hold puts you at the gate at about 23:40. The M5 normally stops running around midnight, the M1 around 00:30, and after that the night buses (NM1 follows the M1 route) take over. If the hold runs long, the M1 at Lotto is the better bet than the M5 at San Siro Stadio because it runs later and has more capacity, and it is worth walking the 15 minutes even if the M5 is nearer. Book a hotel on the M1 or within a walk of it, keep the ATM app open for live line status and do not plan a late train out of Milano Centrale that night. • Do not leave your seat before the final whistle to beat the hold: stewards and police enforce the segregation and the exit route is fixed.
• At Milan home games the away shuttle runs back to the Via Airaghi car park after the match; if you came by coach, the coach waits there.
• Taxis are scarce outside the ground and the taxi apps price accordingly; the Metro is the reliable option until it closes.

Flying in: three airports, one obvious choice

Milan has three airports and only one is close. Linate is about 7 km east of the centre, and the M4 blue line runs from the terminal to San Babila in 12 to 15 minutes for the standard €2.20 ATM fare, with the last trains around 00:20. If there is a Linate flight from your airport, book it. Malpensa is about 50 km north-west. The Malpensa Express train runs every 15 minutes to Cadorna (about 40 minutes), Porta Garibaldi and Centrale (about 50 minutes) and costs €15 (about £13) single or €25 return as of September 2026; the taxi fixed fare set by the Lombardy region is €114 (about £98) to anywhere in the city. Bergamo Orio al Serio, where most of the low-cost UK routes land, is about 50 km east; the Terravision, Orio Shuttle and Flixbus coaches to Centrale take about an hour and were priced around €10 (about £9) in January 2026, with lower prices online.

For the Sunderland trip Bergamo will be where the seats are, and a Bergamo arrival works fine if you accept the coach into Centrale. For the Liverpool trip in January, Malpensa has the most UK frequencies and the Express to Cadorna puts you on the M1 red line, which is the line you want for the stadium anyway. Book the return leg for the day after the match, not the same night.

Where away fans drink, and the alcohol order you should expect

The Navigli canals in the south of the city and the bars around Piazza del Duomo are where English supports have gathered for every recent San Siro trip; Newcastle's 2023 support lined the Naviglio Grande with flags before the Metro out. Football Ground Guide recommends 442 Sports Pub on Via Procaccini and Henry's on Viale Col di Lana for a football crowd, and there are several Irish bars within a short walk of the Duomo. A pint of draught lager in a central bar runs €6 to €7 (about £5 to £6) in 2026; expect more on the canals at night.

For higher-risk European nights the Milan prefect issues a fixture-specific ordinance banning the sale of alcohol in defined zones and hours. For Inter v Arsenal on 6 November 2024 the order covered Piazza Duomo, San Babila, Cordusio, Largo Cairoli, Piazza Castello and Foro Buonaparte from 08:00 to 20:00, and the Darsena, the Navigli, Corso Como, the Sempione area and the whole San Siro district from midday to midnight, with alcohol also prohibited inside the stadium and in its surroundings. A partial order was issued for Milan v Rennes in February 2024 when 7,000 French fans travelled. Nothing had been published for the December and January fixtures as of 10 September 2026; the orders usually appear two or three days before the game. Assume one is coming for both British fixtures, drink at lunchtime if you want a drink, and treat anything sold to you inside the ground as alcohol-free, because it will be.

Police, ultras and staying out of trouble

Milan's policing model for English visitors is containment: an escorted route into the away end, ID checks at a pre-filter well before the turnstile and a hold-back afterwards. The NPCC surveys covering three seasons of English visits describe the same pattern each time, with feedback on the police generally positive and the stewarding, signage and communication rated poorly. Trouble around San Siro has historically been between Italian ultra groups rather than aimed at visiting fans; the fatal incident outside the ground in December 2018 involved Inter and Napoli supporters. That is the reason the segregation exists and the reason to follow it.

The practical rules are the same ones your club prints. Keep colours discreet on the Metro and in the centre until you are with your own support, avoid the Curva Nord side of the ground at Inter games and the Curva Sud side at Milan games, do not respond to provocation outside the away entrance and carry your passport at all times, which the Foreign Office advises for Italy in any case. Pickpocketing on the M1 and M3 at Duomo, Centrale and Cadorna is the most likely crime you will meet, and a bar tab is the second: check prices before you order on the canals. Where to stay and how a two-night trip prices out

Stay on the M1 red line or within a walk of it. Cadorna, Cordusio and the streets between the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco put you 20 minutes from Lotto, close to the Malpensa Express and next to the pre-match bars. Centrale is fine for a Bergamo or Malpensa arrival and sits on the M2 and M3, one change from the M1. Navigli is the nightlife choice and sits on the M2 at Porta Genova, which means two changes to reach the stadium and a longer walk home after the hold-back. Hotels near Lotto and the stadium are residential and quiet, and you will spend the rest of the trip commuting in. There is no data on Milan hotel prices for the December and January fixtures yet, but the pattern for European nights in Madrid and Munich is a sharp rise once the draw is made, so book a free-cancellation rate the day you know you are going. GBP conversions use the exchange rate of €1 = £0.86 on 9 September 2026 and are rounded. Flights are the variable: a Bergamo return booked on draw day is a different number from one booked in December, and January mid-week fares to Malpensa have been the more forgiving of the two in recent seasons.

Is this the last chance to see San Siro?

Nearly. Inter and Milan completed the €197 million purchase of the stadium and the surrounding land from the city in November 2025, appointed Foster + Partners and MANICA to design a 71,500-seat replacement next door, and secured €354 million of financing in August 2026. Site works began in summer 2026, which is why the car parks and the west-side gates have gone. Construction of the new stadium is scheduled to run from October 2027 to October 2030 with an inauguration around December 2030, after which the current ground is to be demolished in 2031 and 2032 with only part of the second ring retained. The clubs will keep playing at San Siro until the new ground opens, so you have this season and probably three more, each with fewer facilities as the site expands. The ground also hosted the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on 6 February 2026, its last global event before the diggers arrive.

If the trip is partly a pilgrimage, do the Museum and Tour on the day before the match: the entrance is beside Gate 6, the route takes in both dressing rooms, the tunnel and the pitchside benches, and it is shortened or closed on matchdays. The Skywalk along the roof girders, 55 metres up, is sold separately and closes for winter, so it will not be available for the January game. Trip timeline: what to do and when

• Draw day: read your club's ticket news, note the registration window and the credit criteria, book a free-cancellation hotel on the M1, book flights before the price moves.

• Full time: expect a 30 to 60 minute hold; walk to Lotto for the M1; if it is past 00:30, the NM1 night bus follows the same route.
