With a thumping and monumental 4-1 win against the La Liga leaders FC Barcelona, Sevilla has ended a decade’s curse at their home ground. Sevilla has not won against Barcelona at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium since October 3, 2015.
What should have been a balm to the wounds caused by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League turned out to be quicksand, which swallowed Hansi Flick’s men. For the past 10 years, Barca has always come out on top at Sevilla, but this time, the determination of Sevillistas and the group fatigue of Barcelona became the deciding factor in this tie. Here are the reasons why Barcelona lost this important fixture and how they can bounce back:
It's no secret that Barcelona’s squad depth is shallow, and the injuries are affecting their game and shape. With Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Gavi, Ter Stegen, Fermin Lopez, and Joan Garcia injured, Flick’s men are working overtime and without rest. This accumulated group fatigue is slowing Barca’s progress and leaves them exposed physically and tactically.
The mid-week clash against PSG was not just another normal UCL star clash; it was, in fact, a tactical expose of Barcelona. PSG stripped all of Barcelona’s tactical mishaps, and Hansi Flick will now struggle to move his pieces in the upcoming matches, as the teams will make it difficult for Barcelona. Barca played against a weaker PSG, and most of their players were out injured. Yet PSG kept pressing Barcelona to the very end, and they won the match with physical prowess rather than technical prowess. The same happened against Sevilla as they came pressing against Barcelona relentlessly up until the very end and bagged four goals.
It is a rare enough thing to watch Robert Lewandowski struggling to find the net. But it seems age has finally caught up with Robert Lewandowski. Balde won a penalty when Barcelona were trailing by one goal. Lewandowski missed the penalty and failed to level things at Pizjuan. Sevilla capitalised on Barca’s misfortune and went on to score two more. It is time for Barca to bring in a more clinical and younger striker to reinforce the attack.
The 41000+ fans at the Pizjuan became the 12th player on the field. They constantly cheered their home team and jeered the away team. Barcelona’s morale was drained with constant pressing from the players on the field and fans off the field. It is not an easy fixture, and Sevilla fans once again proved why the Pizjuan stadium is a fortress. Now Hansi Flick is forced to devise a plan B as plan A has been exposed and is out in the public. He must rotate and rest his squad more often and focus on building a different approach. The January transfer window will be crucial for Barcelona as the board must bring in more fresh blood in order to reinforce the current squad in order to maintain their chances of winning titles this season.
